I haven't checked this lately but at one point, the dirty bit did not get reset and you would be prompted the next time you connected your device even if you did safely eject the media.

Now it is back. But, the comments here seem to imply it never went away. I've always had an occasional occurrence, but, I agree it is worse recently. This might be firmware 4.31.x. Or it might be a change in Windows. From the reports, I don't have a clear picture of whether it is reduced by going back to 4.30.x. If this is a firmware problem, then Linux or Mac users would see it as well. But, they don't tend to report the drive is dirty in the same way as Windows does. I think you would need to manually check for this. I don't have access to a Linux box at the moment to check. |

Is it possible that they switched back to an older version of dosftools, perhaps by mistake?
For what it matters, before upgrading to 4.31, I only got the error after deleting a book in Calibre and then reconnecting. After 4.31 was installed, I started getting it on about half of my reconnects, though it didn't have any pattern to it. Then I downgraded and stopped getting entirely. - touch - Glo hd - Clara - Aura One - Libra 1 - Libra 2 It did it with my Sonys, from the 300 to the T3 and even my multiple Kindles. If it’s wrong for you that’s great but it does it with everything I’ve ever plugged into my PC. *shrugs* |

As far as I remember, the older firmwares just popped up the Dutch dictionary. |

I plugged in to update a few fanfics and when I ejected Kobo started forcibly updating itself again. Not sure how that happened; I disabled Kobo Utilities 'check new firmware' and I don't use the desktop app.
I'll give it another try though. I have backups. Last edited by ownedbycats; 02-03-2022 at 08:17 AM. |

Hi!
This update bricked my kobo clara hd and i had to to a manual sd image restore using the image provided by the kindness of Davidfor on this forum. I want to know if I should attempt the update again? I want to read a bunch of articles through Pocket and everytime i click on the sync button, it tries downloading the update again. Is there a way to stop the update? Also, I used the sql trick to never sign into the device when I initially set it up. Would that be the reason for the bricked update? |

The other reason a device might seem to be bricked by an update is if the SD card is failing. And if that was the case, then it would only be a matter of time before it happened. The update might trigger it, but, mainly because it is writing to different parts of the SD card. Others have reported issues with different updates. But, from what I can tell, the issues are already there and the reboot needed to install the update just means that the actual problem is finally noticed. At this point, you may as well try the update. It will probably work. But, if it fails, then you have the image and can restore it. If the update is a problem for you, there is probably a patch to block it. |

Is there any method to enable WiFi on any older version FM and NOT have the auto OTA upgrade?
I have WiFi off on my Kobos, but I'd like sometimes to look up a word or phrase online. |

There is a patch for blocking Wi-Fi updates. I think it says that can be damage your ereader, but I've got in place for years and nothing has happened (not exagerating about years).

Does the patch allow you to sync? I haven't had any issues so far, but if I need to revert again it might be useful.
