Defect of some kind for sure! The manager at the store was saying she’ll exchange it but since it’s a new product and we don’t know much about it it could be like that and there’s no guarantee that the next one won’t be like this too… I was trying not to be rude but I went over the list of all the readers I have or have had over the years and NONE of them did this and they are not at all designed to be like this.

She did allow for the exchange which I appreciated and got the new one all set up and as expected, no light coming through like that anywhere but now with this one, I can’t sign into Overdrive which is really frustrating. The first one I had signed in no problem but this one just goes around in circles. Sign in. Ok. Flash flash back to the sign in page. Signin. Grr

Edit: I was finally able to sign into Overdrive on my reader after signing out of my Kobo account.

I've only owned two Kobos so I'll avoid most of the questions.

The font size is based on user choice, not the Kobo itself. Any Kobo can use any large font. I might suggest using a non-serif font. There's at least one native to the Kobo but you could also download Emberly: https://www.cufonfonts.com/font/amazon-ember

As others have said, you can adjust the size of any of the fonts from too small to read to ridiculously large. So no worries there.

A lot of people like the font ChareInk cobbled together by fellow user JSWolf. You can download it here.

I would suggest going with an 8" version of an e-reader. You can also adjust fonts, and font properties (including both size and weight/thickness) on Kobo e-readers. Get an 8" Kobo and you have a lot of good options and space for fonts.

I hade personally some problems with uneven warm light on the Kobo Aura One 8" (had three units, before giving up). Now I use Kobo Forma 8", and very happy with the even warm light (have a small dark strip close to the right border, but I do not think about it). Love to read in dark rooms at night with the Forma.

Also a Kobo Sage 8" could be a good option, but due to weight I have not got it myself.

Kobo should make their font adjustment more incremental like their boldness adjustment. Or remove the comically large size font no one could ever use to reduce the range of sizes.

I'm often caught between two font sizes when the ideal would be in between. I'm guessing there's a way to correct this in calibre, but it shouldn't be necessary.

Having an 8 inch reader is a kind of insurance policy because any of these formatting issues, and I'm surprised how many there are, are compensated for with the larger screen.

There's a patch for it. No need to do anything in Calibre.

There's the old Kobo Forma [8"] - but unfortunately, it has the 'Wedge of Woe' strip of light issue located on the side where the buttons are located. Some people are not bothered by this issue and are quite happy. Other people find it disconcerting and a major distraction.

Thanks. I thought I remembered reading something about a patch somewhere.

For me, that is true of every ereader I've seen. Who uses those largest font sizes?

Yeah. At least you can patch them on Kobos and Kindles. On a Nook, you can't do anything, in the stock reader at least.

My Dad. When I got my first Kobo he was 82, living with us and I gave him my PW3. He got used to using it, but only at maximum font size

More and more, I plan to ride my Aura One to the end of the line and get off at the cemetery. I’ll make my best choice of what’s available then in 8” and with luck, there will be something new. I’d always thought I’d get a Forma when a new 8” device came out and the Forma price dropped, but the price essentially hasn’t dropped. And not only is the Sage expensive, there are the weight and battery issues. If my Aura One croaked today, I’d probably have to go with the Sage; for not much more money it’s a much newer device, but I hope it doesn’t come to that. And for the time being, the costless device with the nice bookish rectangular shape seems by far preferable to either of the pricey newer alternatives. I’m hopeful that I won’t be forced to make a choice between them; my two oldest Kobos are coming up on ten years old and still work well enough. Vivat Aura One!
