Obok (part of the DeDRM package) should be able to download most of them directly from your Kobo device into Calibre -- but I have had mixed results with Obok (and I don't have many Kobo books to test with).

The best way to archive your Kobo eBooks is to download them as ePub. That requires doing this one at a time. There's no way to bulk download them.

Using the DeDRM plugin with Adobe Digital Editions 2.0.1 you can strip the DRM for the ePub that have DRM.

If your computer is a Windows or OS X device, you can install the Kobo desktop app. From My Books, select Not Downloaded as the view, select all books and then Download. You can then use the Obok plugin to transfer those books into calibre.

KePub is not a good format to archive your eBooks. ePub is the format to archive your eBooks.

Perhaps you could explain why epub is a better format than kepub to archive ebooks?

Given the major difference is the collection of spans (<span class="koboSpan" id="kobo.9.4"> as an example) for which koboSpan is not defined in the stylesheets making it effective a null operation. The ModifyEpub plugin for calibre will happily strip those out in a few seconds so I really don't see much difference in using either as your archive format.

If you're a bit more technically inclined, there's a Python script/tool to assist with doing the download in bulk and I've used it with success before. kobo-book-downloader GitHub

Otherwise, downloading and removing DRM via calibre plugins or obok script as has been mentioned before is the best bet.

Why have to remove code when there's an easy way to get the eBooks without this extra code? If you want them as KePub on a Kobo, that's easy to do. If you don't want them as KePub, then that's already done.

It just doesn't make sense to go for KePub. ITts well known that ePub is currently the best archive format for eBooks.

Maybe I don't remember correctly, but I thought for sure when I used Obok, it converted my KePubs into ePubs.

YES, you can can do a bulk download. You do not HAVE TO do them one at a time. You may then decide whether to convert them to epub, another operation that can be done as a batch. Or, you may even decide to leave them as kepubs. The choice, nattering nabob of negativity notwithstanding, is yours.

Yes and no. OBOK imports them into calibre with a file extension of .epub, but internally all the kepub-specific <span>s, <div>s, <script>s etc are still present. These days I use my own calibre Editor routine for removing these but I think the 'Modify Epub' plugin still has options which can strip (most of?) them.

Strictly speaking it would be more "correct" for the OBOK-imported file to have a .kepub extension, but that would probably lead to some user inconveniences.

Hmmm...
  1. run Kobo Desktop, download all new ebooks. Open calibre, run Obok, copy all new ebooks into calibre.
  2. Open Kobo web page. Go to My Books. Click on the Actions ( ... ) menu, download 1 book. Repeat as necessary. Open calibre. Add books from Downloads, Add books from My Digital Editions.
  3. Common - Update metadata, resize covers, run ModifyEpub on the batch.

Care to guess which one is faster and less error prone?

As for 'well known'? Well known by whom? Most widely adopted? Sure. Best archive format? You are entitled to your opinion and I am entitled to believe that your opinion is derisible.

Obok just removed the DRM. The eBooks were still KePub.

Care to guess which one gives a better result? That would be archiving in ePub. There is a thread someplace on MR about what format to use for archiving and ePub is it.

And I will disagree with that nameless linkless thread. As far as I am concerned, the differences between kepub and epub are pretty much invisible to the end user even before stripping the spans/divs and scripting when using an epub3 capable renderer.

Are you referring to a thread from 2008? What format would you use for storage? Perhaps you could point to a thread that is from Jan. 2020 or later?
