Might be East coast (where I grew up). To me, Rug was something smaller than a full area covering. We used to lay upon a Throw rug in front of the TV (over a Hardwood floor). There are Rugs alongside my bed (Again HW floors) that are nice on bare feet while I find my slippers

I get tripped up by "waggon," "pavement," "[specific noun] [general noun]," "of + [participle]," where I'd use "to + [infinitive]," dangling adverbs, etc.

It's worse than that. What is considered to be "football" depends on the state you live in. In NSW, it is Rugby League and Victoria it is Aussie rules. The other states fall one way or the other. The "real" Football association (the one with the round ball that is actually kicked and not carried like all the other footballs) has been trying to claim the name back and stop the use of "soccer", but, all it is doing is adding confusion.

From memory, Aussie rules claim to have the first codified set of rules. But, I don't know if handing back eyes is part of the rules. I've never followed it and don't understand the game at all as I grew up in NSW and hence football is Rugby League, but, my sons played round-ball Football and followed that, so I'm just confused.

Until I discover they were talking about, maybe, 25C for a few days. Which is what I consider to be a nice day. A heatwave here would probably mean the minimum temperature for a few days was 25C.

Rug is used in the UK for carpeting and blankets. However, on it's own, it's usually a small carpet.

Lap rug: small size blanket used to put over one's legs while seated. Can be quite light-weight compared to the full-size blanket put on a bed. Tends to be decorative as well as it usually lives in the sitting room and hence is on public view.
Hearth rug: small piece of carpet placed in front of the fire place. Given the probability of sparks, it's cheaper to replace a hearth rug than the main carpet for the room. With central heating, this usage is in decline.
Bed side rug: small piece of carpet placed beside the bed to keep your feet warm until you find your slippers.

Here in the Netherlands, a 'heatwave' is defined as at least 5 successive days with a maximum temperature of over 25C, of which at least 3 have a maximum temperature of over 30C.

Nothing special for you lot down under, I guess

Friends in Perth (WA, not Scotland) mentioned temps in the mid 40s last week, so 30 would no doubt be a refreshing cold snap for them

"Shined" instead of "shone" always trips me up and dumps me out of the story. Ditto, an author dropping double consonants - gravely and gravelly do NOT mean the same thing and why should I have to guess meaning from context.

Shift happens. My 1013.75% unscientific gut feeling is that "shone" is fading fast, "shined" turning up in online sources I would not have expected to see it
