How to turn off statistics?
I thought I had turned off reading stats a long time ago but I just got an email from Kobo detailing reading activity over the past month. I don't know if this is coming from my Clara or from the phone app which I use once in a while.

I want this OFF and can't find the setting for it on either my Clara or in the app. I'm probably overlooking something obvious but if anybody can tell me where to find it I'd really appreciate it!

You cannot turn the statistics off completely. They get cleared when the privacy setting are changed. But, they are collected and displayed. It's possible turning the privacy settings off will turn of the Reading Life email, but, I don't know. Personally, I would just ignore it or use a filter to remove it. And there is an unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email.

Beyond that, I've never gone looking at turning it off as I like them. But, you could ask Kobo how to get rid of them if none of the above work.

Yeah, I was just wondering about that as well. I noticed they were turned on and wanted to shut them off. I thought you used to be able to turn these off in Settings somewhere.

I don't remember getting this email in a long time. Thought I'd turned off whatever caused it. I could've sworn there was a setting for it somewhere on the Clara. Guess I must have misremembered.

Can't find such a setting in the app either.

At one time turning off the sharing options would remove the Activity page with the Reading Stats. But, the stats were still collected in the background and stored in the database. At some point, Kobo changed things to make the stats available on the device when the sharing option is off. And I believe that was done at the request of users.

The privacy/data sharing option is at the bottom of the "Energy saving and privacy" page of the settings. For most of us it is checkbox about sharing data. For some jurisdictions (California might be the only one), it is a link you need to visit to set the privacy options. But, I have no idea if this is related to the Reading Life email.

If you are suddenly getting the emails again, it is probably related to some other change. Maybe you have agreed to something elsewhere that allowed Kobo to send them. Or a change in the email means your filters or junk mail blockers are now letting it through.

I don't block Kobo emails because I want some of them.

I wonder if it's something in the Kobo reading app. I rarely read on the app but did use it recently.

Unfortunately it's not. I live in Idaho and get the link instead of a checkbox. (The link seems to deal with website traffic, but maybe it affects the reader as well?) It's not that big of a deal, just an annoyance. It feels like I'm in 4th grade getting a gold star pasted to my assignment. Kind of patronizing.

I use a lot of filters to rearrange my emails. And there are some sources for whom I keep some emails and discard others. When they change the emails, I have to revisit the filters.

No, it isn't in the app. There might be a page somewhere that lets you choose what sort of emails you want from Kobo. I can't quickly see anything that isn't a global on/off.

The link should be dealing with the how Kobo connects to you and uses your data. That should include what the devices you own do. I'm not sure if I have seen it. But, it might not be available to me here.

I gotta wonder what "page flips" means in the statistics. I tend to read quickly, then realize I missed something and flip back and forth - wonder if it counts all that, or just forward progress.

I have no interest in keeping track of such things and I'd just as soon Kobo didn't keep track of them either. I'm OK with them recommending books based on what I've bought from them in the past, but I find it kind of creepy that they are counting how many pages I read.

It looks like it might have happened at release 4.19. So obviously it's not that big of a deal to me or I would have noticed it sooner. I don't normally "finish" my books or mark them "finished." I usually ignore the blurbs at the end of the books, so that may be why I don't see the popups much.

That was replaced by the option I mentioned above about sharing data. And, from something Kobo has told me, the reading stats collection is embedded very deeply in the code. Turning it off is not practical. That option didn't actually turn off the stats collection, it just hid the screens that would let you see them. Also, part of the stats collection is the reading status of the books. And that is needed for normal operation and when syncing status to other devices or apps. The Reading Life email is separate, and probably should have an option somewhere to turn it off. As with all of these things, I would recommend talking to Kobo and telling them what you want.
