Yes I saw that. Kindle does it pretty much in any format. Kobo is limited to kepub. I can't use Calibre, for instance, since I just use a tablet/phone. So only Kobo bought books would allow image enlargement. I haven't tried it on library books. I wanted to be able to do it on public domain epub which isn't possible.

Correct me if I'm wrong but that is not possible on a Kindle either. You said "Kindle does it on pretty much any format", but Kindle doesn't open epubs?

An option for enhanced epub capability on your Sage (one I use on mine) is to try installing KOReader, something else which I believe is not possible in the most current Kindle FW

Correct....Kindle doesn't read epub. But on a ,mobi public domain it works. On Kindle bought books, it works on all illustrations. Based on my limited experience so far on the Sage, even on Kobo bought books there are some illustrations it doesn't work on including public domain epub.

Don't I need a computer to sideload KOReader? If I had a computer, I'd be all over Calibre!

Since I can't use Calibre on my tablet, the other way Kindle outshines Kobo is I can email a pdf or epub to Amazon and within minutes, Amazon loads a converted version onto my Kindle. I need Calibre etal to convert Kindle DRM to Kobo compatible since Kobo doesn't have a comparable service as respects converting Amazon to Kobo.

To fully exploit Kobo's abilities and possibilities, one needs a computer. I'd be very happy if Amazon put out an 8 inch ereader that included the best of Kobo like Dropbox, integrated Overdrive, stylus support, etc. I can see why many here have multiple ereaders. I'm using my Oasis 2 and the Sage for different purposes.

That's only true if one intends to convert documents regularly. Kindle offers native support for 2 main formats, with one of those formats (mobi) not offering all the features of the other. Kobo does similarly with its 2 formats. There is no need to convert to kepub to read epubs.

Understandably, both vendors presume that their product will be consumed with DRM intact, so comparing the conversion of non-DRMd epubs or PDF (both of which can be read on Kobos without conversion) with De-DRMing and converting Kindle proprietary formats seems a bit like comparing apples and oranges. You can't send DRM protected content to your Kindle for conversion, can you?

No you can't. I've attached what Amazon says you can email them for conversion support. My main point is that Amazon performs some Calibre type functions but Kobo requires a computer - granted both companies have some differences in native formats.

Just opened by second Kobo Sage and yep - a strong lighting gradient is present again. Just going to keep my original and ignore it - for now. Excited for an 8 inch Kindle.

Again, I disagree. Minor differences in image handling and typography aside, there is no effective difference between epub and kepub - kepub is literally "k" epub. Sending either to your Dropbox for later retrieval on your Kobo does not require a computer, any more than emailing an epub to your Kindle does.

It's absolutely fine if you prefer Kindle's system, but it's not intrinsically superior. If you read a lot of epubs, there is even chance that Kobo is a better choice since it will open them without any conversion - and some feel the typography is superior to kepubs. And if a kepub is deemed absolutely essential, there's always this option which works on phones.

There's something to be said for convenience and Amazon offers a fast way to do a conversion IF YOU DON'T HAVE A COMPUTER which is my perspective. Amazon is a box and they have tried to eliminate the need for a computer for most users - it was designed for the widest demographic. Kobo is a bigger box but you need a computer to accomplish the most. Yes, there are many things I can do to supplement not having a computer with the Kobo but not entirely. Calibre and adding things like KOReader is a plus for Kobo users but you need a computer. Ultimately Kobo is the bigger trick pony but some tricks require a computer. That said, I love my Sage as is out of the box. I'm just aware of its additional abilities if one has a computer.

I've bookmarked it. There's a warning that it's experimental, etc and I just got my Sage and don't want to take a chance. It looks super promising. I'll monitor it for when the author has perfected it. Here's something Kobo could add to their product/service that even their users are creating.

I submitted a lengthy reply to Uncle Robin that got flagged for admin approval...was it too long? I don't know. How long do approvals take usually?

TFW you discover your Sage is at 13% and realize it doesn't matter

It is probably more that you are a new user and have made a number of posts quickly. You might have triggered an anti spam check.

As you mention reading public domain books, you might want to look at https://standardebooks.org/. They produce kepub versions of their books. The books are put together very well and better than many other sources for public domain books.

Remember that most (if not all) user created mods are experimental.
