Custom Columns and metadata

I'm trying to streamline and clean up my library. I went to Preferences "Add your own columns"and unchecked several custom columns that I think I no longer need.

However the unchecked columns still show under custom metadata in edit metadata. Is there somewhere else I need to change to stop them showing up or do I have to delete the columns entirely. (I'd like to keep the data just in case).

The tick just Hides or Shows columns. You need to delete them on that screen

You can hide them in Edit Metadata with the Job Spy plugin.

Don't do this is the column is used by a plugin though - I got an error when FanFicFare tried to update a hidden long-text metadata column.

Personally, I just use metadata_edit_custom_column_order tweak to put them at the bottom.
