Apparently it was even worse in some countries, per Wikipedia: In some countries, the paperback editions were split into two (Germany and the United States), three (France) or four volumes (Italy and Portugal) per book.

I'll bet and the third book in his Nights Dawn trilogy is even longer than it. Wikipedia lists the page count as 976 for Great North Road and 1,174 for The Naked God. Now imagine that in a single paperback book. I managed to find this picture showing a bunch of his books, it's impressive:

Indeed, I had to rotate the image to read it, but it's called Watching Trees Grow, a very good (and long) novella about solving a murder in an alternate timeline where the Roman Empire never collapsed. Technology progressed much more rapidly, with electricity, including electric cars, existing at the start of the novel in 1832, and a moon landing in 1856. I'd been wanting to reread it, so I started yesterday. Took me an hour to read the first section.

It's available in his short story collection Manhattan in Reverse: And Other Stories, which isn't on sale, but was dropped to $4.99 starting in October, the first time it's been that cheap since 2018. It's a good deal at that price, and well worth picking up. It's only been cheaper once in 2017, so it's unlikely to go on sale again. It's an excellent introduction to Hamilton's writing without the time commitment most of his novels require.
