The Body on the Beach is the first in Simon Brett's fun IMO Fethering series. It has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07L6FK9H1
Kindle UK/Smile: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07L6FK9H1

Spoiler:
Quote:
Very little disturbs the ordered calm of Fethering, a pleasingly self-contained retirement town on England’s southern coast. Which is precisely why Carole Seddon, who has left behind both her husband and her career at the Home Office, has chosen to reside there. So Carole is surprised to encounter a new neighbour with one name and a colourful past. 'Jude' is not really Fethering . . . but even she is not as surprising as the body Carole finds on the beach.

A body, it has to be said, that has disappeared by the time the police arrive. Only Jude is ready to believe what Carole says she saw – and from that moment on, the two women resolve to turn detective.

You'd even be better losing the B25G6 offer since the difference is $10. But I think you'd still have a chance to buy more for the offer.

Murder at Beaulieu Abbey is the eleventh in Cassandra Clark's Hildegard of Meaux series. I read and really liked the first few books in this series and then just lost track of it. So it's nice to see the most recent (2021) in the series go on sale for £2.84 at Kindle UK - I'll have a chance to catch up. Note that the webpage says it's the eighth of eight, but I think that's due to a publisher change to Severn House, so some of the titles aren't listed. You can see the complete list at SYKM...

Kindle UK/Smile: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08YJYZPSQ

Spoiler:
Quote:
Death and danger await intrepid nun Hildegard of Meaux when she undertakes a secret mission for the good of her Order, in this eleventh action-packed installment of the medieval mystery series.

February, 1390. The Church seethes with rebellion. Newly elected Pope Boniface faces a challenger: the anti-pope Clement, who sows discord from his power base in France.

The quarrel threatens the very survival of the Cistercian Order. So when suspicions grow that distant Beaulieu Abbey may turn traitor, Hildegard's prioress summons her with a mission she can't refuse: travel to the isolated royal abbey and spy out their true allegiance.

The public reason for Hildegard's trip is more prosaic. A young Cornish heiress, promised in marriage to the son of local aristocrat Sir William, needs escorting to her new home. It's not often Hildegard joins a betrothal party, and she's looking forward to meeting the girl.

But little does Hildegard know, death and danger wait at Beaulieu - and even the protection of her travelling companions, the monks militant Brother Gregory and Brother Egbert, may not be enough to keep her safe from harm . . .

Another freebie in the Jeri Howard series by Janet Dawson...

The third book, Take a Number, is free right now at Kindle US and UK.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0054TSJVO
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0054TSJVO

Spoiler:
Quote:
Oakland P.I. Jeri Howard dives right into the middle of a brutal womanizer's divorce proceedings—and murder mystery—in the third installment of Janet Dawson’s compelling female detective series. And in this particular whodunit, the list of who would gladly have done it just keeps growing.

When Ruth Raynor—the mousy soon-to-be ex-wife of an abusive sailor—calls up Jeri Howard to take on her divorce case, Jeri has reservations. For one, the celebrated Bay area PI has never been a fan of petty divorce investigations. Plus Ruth’s sleek divorce attorney—isn’t exactly Jeri’s cup of tea. But Ruth just happens to be the daughter of a former client. And Jeri is as loyal as she's bold.

Sam, the soon-to-be ex-husband is a smart, slick, cocky piece of work—and a mean drunk to boot—who basks in attention (especially from women) like a lizard on a rock. Sam at first comes across as dangerously attractive, except for his pale blue, emotionless eyes—a cold, dead giveaway. Turns out Prince Charming broke his wife’s wrist, gave her a black eye, kept their small daughter hungry and in rags—and hid $100,000 when Ruth filed for divorce.

When Sam winds up with a bullet in his back, the prime suspect, naturally, is Ruth. But Jeri, working hard to keep her client out of jail, discovers a line of suspects so long someone who wanted to kill him would have to take a number and get in line.

A while back I had a problem with a downloaded book being a corrupted file. I called Amazon and the rep did a return for me (I would have waited for a fix but apparently the system doesn't handle that). The book showed as unavailable for a while but when it was available for purchase again I tried to rebuy. I just got an error message saying that I already had the book. I don't remember what I did then; I probably just bought it from Kobo.

My husband just reads books. His eyes glaze over when I talk about Calibre. He has favorite authors from back in our old lives of visiting book stores and buying printed books. Nowadays I keep an eye out for those authors and any other books I think he might like and send him the Amazon links to look at. Then if he wants them I buy the books. We use family library and he downloads the books to the Kindle app on his phone to read and I download them to my Calibre library and deDRM them and back them up just in case.

If it was a book for me I'd just return it and then buy it from Kobo (with a price match if needed) but as it is I think I'll just let it slide. My husband is already reading it and I'm too lazy to work through the substitution process.

Edited to add: I've never used a multi-quote before so at least I learned something.

Black Evening: Tales of Dark Suspense by David Morrell is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
David Morrell is best known for testosterone-fueled thrillers like Extreme Denial and First Blood (whose excellent movie version stars Sylvester Stallone as Rambo). But Morrell has also penned many frightfully scary short stories. In Black Evening, he presents 16 of his favorites, each with a fascinating introduction explaining what provoked him to write it.

"The Dripping" (1971) came to the author in a dream that most would regard as a nightmare. In this eerie little number, a father faces his worst fear when his family goes missing. Morrell suffered his own family tragedy in January of 1987, when his son Matt was diagnosed with bone cancer. "Orange Is for Anguish, Blue for Insanity" (the Horror Writers Association's best novella of 1988) was written shortly before Matt's death. Writing about a mad painter kept Morrell sane: "The made-up horror was paradoxically providing a barrier from real-life horror." But after Matt's death, Morrell was besieged with panic attacks, and could do nothing but "stare at the ceiling" for three years. A harrowing story about lost children and a long buried family secret, "The Beautiful Uncut Hair of Graves" (another HWA award-winner) signified Morrell's return to short fiction. The title is taken from Walt Whitman's poem about death and children; John Rambo's name is a pun on Arthur Rimbaud. Morrell is a genre writer with a poet's soul.

And whether he's writing stories of subtle psychological terror or conjuring up scenarios of pure horror, Morrell never fails to scare the bejesus out of us. --Naomi Gesinger

Bloodmoon is a fairly recent title (the 29th, 2018) in Peter Tremayne's wonderful IMO Sister Fidelma series. It has dropped to £2.99 at Kindle UK right now.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0746MK685
Kindle UK/Smile: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0746MK685

Spoiler:
Quote:
Ireland. AD 671. Sister Fidelma has a mission, and she is sworn by oath to reveal her purpose to no other. The secret investigation leads Fidelma and her companions to the abbey of Finnbarr to question the abbot. But before they have a chance to speak to him, the abbot is found murdered - and the young girl suspected of the crime has fled the scene.

Despite their protests, Fidelma's cohorts agree to accompany her in pursuit of the girl for answers. But as vicious rumours spread, accusing Fidelma's family, the Eóghanacht Kings of Cashel, of conspiring to assassinate the High King and abduct his wife, Sister Fidelma's life is placed in mortal danger.

Unable to tell the truth of her quest to anyone, including her husband Eadulf, Fidelma's time is running out - and now she has no choice but to face the challenge, and her enemies, alone.

"The Plot: A Novel" by Jean Hanff Korelitz is just $3.99 today.

"The Good Sister: A Novel" by Sally Hepworth is only $3.99 today.

"The Therapist: A Novel" by B.A. Paris is a mere $3.99 today.

Apparently, there's a sale on books with the subtitle "A Novel"!

I'm waiting for someone to write "A Novel: A Novel."
