I don’t think it is the selection process, but rather that my patience level is low. With people that is a moral failing. With books? Not if the reason is that I find the book tedious. If the reason is that the book has a POV I don’t like, maybe that’s wrong of me. But I try to finish at least some books like that, so my mind isn’t a complete echo chamber. The last book I finished was in that I-profoundly-disagree category (and I’m therefore not sharing the title). Now, I’m mostly a library borrower, so there isn’t a big financial issue. But when I do buy a book, being certain it’s one I would like, I still often find I was wrong, and abandon it. |

Can you search for the books that ereraderiq lists on your amazon? Although I suspect that few will be free elsewhere; I've often seen people post about a book that's on sale or free here in the US but it's not in the UK, or vice versa.

It sort of seems silly to me to have some 3rd party providing this service; why doesn't Amazon do it? I don't know how ereaderiq categorizes the books but I looked at some that I got for free and in the Product Details it lists what looks like could be used for their genre under Best Sellers Rank. Or maybe they at least provide an API that ereaderiq is using.

But for monitoring price drops on books/authors, ereaderiq is great. Quote:
If I recall correctly, ereaderiq was partially funded by Amazon at some point. But now they are on their own. |

Most of the third party price tracking services (that I've looked at) are pretty useless to me in Australia. But I have noticed that in recent moths Kobo have become good of at notifying me when books on my Wishlist come on special - which makes the wishlist much more useful than it used to be.
I wasn't sure this was ever going to happen, because as ZodWallop observes, it doesn't really seem to be in the sellers' best interests. But Kobo are doing it anyway. |

Then why do Steam and GOG do it? I'm thinking more along the other lines -- people are far more likely to buy on sale. A sale at lesser price is better than no sale.

Other people will have their own reasons for placing books on wishlists, and so what ends up best for the seller depends on the averaging of all our individual peculiarities in combination with whatever business requirements exist (buy prices, and policies etc etc), and also taking into account customer satisfaction and just getting the customer to open their wallets. In short: it's complex and different businesses are going to draw the line in different places. (At least, that's how I imagine it. I don't have insider knowledge to know how accurate my guesses are.) |

When it comes to abandoning books, I hardly ever did when I was young. There usually weren't that many books around, and library trips were few and far between.
Now, when a book isn't working, I sit back and decide why. If I'm just not in the mood, otherwise I might like it, I just set it aside to try again later. Sometimes, I do come back, years later, and enjoy it. If I don't like the characters, the style is not for me, or it's not well written, then I'll trade/sell/donate a physical copy, or delete it from Calibre and mark it DNF. (I will leave it in my library at Amazon, Kobo, Other. For now.) Then I just shrug and move on. There may be hundreds of millions of books out that I'll not like, and a million I'll absolutely like, love, or adore. I can't find the millions of good ones, or have time to read, them if I'm plodding through stuff I'm not enjoying. They're just not worth it. |
