You wouldn't, but for millions of people it's the only option to get something they want or can afford. And yes, I'm speaking from personal experience. I've had to use mail forwarders and whatnot to buy an ereader. The alternative was to buy a much more expensive one locally (which I couldn't afford at the time) or stick to paper books, which also was not acceptable to me. So I took the risk. And so do many other people all over the world.

I never read with light on during daytime and normal light. I prefer reading with just natural light from the room.

During night reading in he dark at bedtime I prefer orange light on the reader set to quite low light level.

Grit my teeth and bear it. Well, if it was downright broken on arrival, I might have gotten some of my money back, at least, depending on the seller. But not if I simply didn't like it. That's the reason user reviews are of utmost importance to many people. They can't just send something back because it's not quite like what they expected.

More precisely, I'm not speaking about the last time I bought a new ereader (I guess I could have sent both of my new Kobos back, if I wanted to), but about earlier times, many years ago. Often I didn't manage to find a seller who shipped directly to my country, and based on the posts here, there are plenty of people in the same situation.

Well, going by the howling and moaning about various frontlight and contrast issues practically every time a new ereader is released, people like you and Martinot are in the minority.

Personally I'm not terribly fussy and can make do with uneven light/less than stellar contrast. I still do notice the differences, though.

the problem i have with either buying an ereader based on positive reviews on MR or not buying one because of negatives reviews is i may disagree entirely with said reviews/opinions. therefore either keeping it or wanting to send it back.

thankfully i'm not in the position of having to buy an ereader and not being able to return it for whatever reason. if my only option was to buy and risk either not liking it or it being broken and not being able to get a replace or a refund then as i've already said i wouldn't buy it. i appreciate others may vary

i wouldn't describe it as howling and moaning. these things (ereaders) aren't exactly cheap. if they can't make the lighting to a decent even uniform level then perhaps they shouldn't make them at all.

I am considering it. I wouldn't bother with the audio books, as I listen occasionally via Overdrive on my phone for borrowed audio books. but the extra space and the features seem to be somewhat appealing.

Personally I think that, in the daytime, the best thing to do is adjust the backlight for clearest display. This usually means just on enough so that the background looks paper white and contrast is best. If I go out in the sun I turn it down a bit, even off when in full sun, indoors in low light, I run the backlight somewhere in the middle - often in the 50% to 70% range.

i use the Kobo Aura 6" which as the external micro SD card slot (the good old days eh) all of my books are on a 32GB micro SD card. i'm currently up to 4888 books on it mostly kepub taking up 12GB of space (yes i have some big books)

as far as i'm aware the external micro SD card slot will only take up to a 32GB card which means i've still got 20GB of storage space spare

8GB of storage (as i've said) certainly isn't enough for me, but i'd prefer the external micro SD card slot making a comeback in 2022 rather than the 32GB micro SD card glued inside the ereader

best wishes koboy

Are you sure about the statistics?

I am fussy with the warm light at dark. That is why I love the Forma, and why I sent back the Aura One three times before getting my money back.
