The Painted Queen by Elizabeth Peters and Joan Hess is now on sale at £2.99 at Amazon UK. It's not been below £3.99 since publication in mid-2017, and was £4.99 most recently.

This is the 20th and last in her Amelia Peabody series set in the world of Egyptian archaeology in late 19th/early 20th century. Great fun.

The Crossing Places (Ruth Galloway #1) by Elly Griffiths is $1.99 on Amazon.com
Quote:
Forensic archeologist Dr. Ruth Galloway is in her late thirties. She lives happily alone with her two cats in a bleak, remote area near Norfolk, land that was sacred to its Iron Age inhabitants—not quite earth, not quite sea. But her routine days of digging up bones and other ancient objects are harshly upended when a child’s bones are found on a desolate beach. Detective Chief Inspector Nelson calls Galloway for help, believing they are the remains of Lucy Downey, a little girl who went missing a decade ago and whose abductor continues to taunt him with bizarre letters containing references to ritual sacrifice, Shakespeare, and the Bible. Then a second girl goes missing and Nelson receives a new letter—exactly like the ones about Lucy.

Is it the same killer? Or a copycat murderer, linked in some way to the site near Ruth’s remote home?

I've mentioned a time or two or two hundred that Michael Pearce's Mamur Zapt series is one of my favorite series. I love the humor, and I'm a huge Egyptophile, and the historical background is great too. Now two titles in the series have dropped to £1.99 each at Kindle UK.

The Mingrelian Conspiracy, #9

A classic historical mystery from the award-winning Michael Pearce, set in the Egypt of the 1900s. When gang violence strikes the city, the inimitable Mamur Zapt is called in to investigate.

In 1908, the city of Cairo lives – and dies – by its cafe culture. But for restaurant businesses, the protection rackets pose a problem. And the city’s cafes are experiencing a sudden upsurge in threats from various gangs.

When one cafe proprietor is attacked, his legs broken for noncompliance, everyone is worried. Then the Russian Charge files a complaint – the Mingrelians may be targeting a Russian Grand Duke. Now the Mamur Zapt, Head of the Secret Police, must find a way to prevent an international incident…

The Fig Tree Murder, #10

From the award-winning Michael Pearce, comes a delightful murder mystery set in Egypt in 1908. A body is found on the tracks of a new electric railway and the Mamur Zapt is called in to investigate.

Cairo, 1908. It’s called the Tree of the Virgin, a site of religious interest, perilously close to the construction site of the new electric railway. Sinister power groups are jostling for position, but who dumped the body of the humble villager on the track?

When the Mamur Zapt begins to pick his way through the local and national power structures, he has to ask, what is the significance of the Fig Tree? Does it matter that the caravans for Mecca gather only a mile or so away? And what of the ostrich that passed in the night?

IT'S A NEW START FOR ALASKA STATE TROOPER LIAM CAMPBELL – BUT THE SAME OLD PROBLEMS.

It's Labor Day in Blewestown, Alaska, and it seems most of the town's thirty-five hundred residents have turned out to celebrate. Not Liam Campbell, though.

He's been in town for about a week when an archaeologist invites Liam out to his dig site. He's on the verge of a momentous discovery, one he says will be well worth the State Trooper's time.

Two days later, the archaeologist is dead, and Liam Campbell is about to learn that he's traded one troubled bush town for another.

Awesome, another Michael Pearce fan! Have you tried his "Dead Man in ...." series. I love those too. They are mostly pretty nicely priced long-term in the UK, ranging from £1.99 to £3.99, even without sales.

Death with a Double Edge is the fourth and most recent (2021) in Anne Perry's spin-off Daniel Pitt series...at least until the fifth one comes out in April of next year. It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08D8KR3P9
Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B08D8KR3P9
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/dea...-a-double-edge

Spoiler:
Quote:
Daniel Pitt’s investigation into his colleague’s murder leads him through London’s teeming underbelly to the suspicious dealings of one of England’s most influential shipbuilding magnates in a thrilling novel from New York Times bestselling author Anne Perry.

“Timely . . . and engaging . . . another terrific mystery.”—Bookreporter

When junior barrister Daniel Pitt is summoned to the scene of a murder in the London district known as Mile End, he knows only that the victim is a senior barrister from the same firm. To Daniel’s relief, it is not his close friend Toby Kitteridge, but the question remains: What was this respected colleague doing in such a rough part of the city? The firm’s head, Marcus fford Croft, may know more than he admits, but fford Croft’s memory is not what it used to be, and his daughter, Miriam—Daniel’s sometime sidekick—isn’t in the country to offer her usual help. And so Daniel and Toby must investigate on their own, lest the police uncover something that may cast a suspicious light on the firm.

Their inquiries in Mile End lead them to a local brothel and to an opium den, but also—unexpectedly—to a wealthy shipbuilder crucial to Britain’s effort to build up its fleet, which may soon face the fearsome naval might of Germany. Daniel finds his path blocked by officials at every turn, his investigation so unwelcome that even his father, Special Branch head Thomas Pitt, receives a chilling warning from a powerful source. Suddenly, not just Daniel but his whole family—including his beloved mother, Charlotte—is in danger. Will Daniel’s devotion to justice be the undoing of his entire life, and endanger Britain’s defense at sea? As ever, the fates of family and history are inextricably intertwined in this spellbinder from Anne Perry.

Velvet Was the Night by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is $3.99 on Amazon.com
Quote:
1970s, Mexico City. Maite is a secretary who lives for one thing: the latest issue of Secret Romance. While student protests and political unrest consume the city, Maite escapes into stories of passion and danger.

Her next-door neighbor, Leonora, a beautiful art student, seems to live a life of intrigue and romance that Maite envies. When Leonora disappears under suspicious circumstances, Maite finds herself searching for the missing woman—and journeying deeper into Leonora’s secret life of student radicals and dissidents.

Meanwhile, someone else is also looking for Leonora at the behest of his boss, a shadowy figure who commands goon squads dedicated to squashing political activists. Elvis is an eccentric criminal who longs to escape his own life: He loathes violence and loves old movies and rock ’n’ roll. But as Elvis searches for the missing woman, he watches Maite from a distance—and comes to regard her as a kindred spirit who shares his love of music and the unspoken loneliness of his heart.

Now as Maite and Elvis come closer to discovering the truth behind Leonora’s disappearance, they can no longer escape the danger that threatens to consume their lives, with hitmen, government agents, and Russian spies all aiming to protect Leonora’s secrets—at gunpoint.

If I didn't already have them all, I'd be giving myself a present right now. Highly recommended. Provided you don't mind the very occasional real miracle.
