Increased font size in Nickel

Several weeks ago, probably after some update the font size in the Nickel reader suddenly increased. In the Article viewer, and in Kobo book preview it is normal, the same as it used to be. In book viewer it is twice as big as in the article viewer. The font size setting is the same in all three cases, about 20% from the minimum

Did you have the patch to match the font size between epub and kepub installed? An update would have removed that patch.

No, I never used kepub books. I am seeing the issue in the regular .epub. I've never activated that patch either. And I was hoping that the firmware update will clear that, but no, it did not

What you are seeing is the expected behaviour. The first image is an epub. If the later are either purchased books or previews, they are kepubs. There is a scaling difference between the epub and kepub renderer. This has always been the case. There was a change in how this works in a recent firmware version, but, it shouldn't make a difference when reading.

If you were not seeing this difference before, it usually means a patch as @DNSB suggested, or you were sideloading as kepub instead of epub. And while you state you have never used kepubs, you would not be the first person to have made that mistake. If you have been using calibre with the KoboTouchExtended driver, then that will have sideloaded books as kepub, not epub.

But, a simple reason is that the default font size on the device would produce that difference. If you have lost the setting from the config file, then the next epub that you open will appear to large. Once you change the setting, it is used for all books until the next time you change it.

I am sideloading most of my books, and most of them via direct file copy from PC to Kobo. The book in the screenshot below was probably sent via Calibre, but I do not see any difference between it and those I simply copied as a file

What setting are you talking about? I do see the font shrink as I move the slider, but even at the smallest setting it is too large. BTW, the middle screenshot is a Pocket Article. Are those treated as kepub too?

It doesn't really matter how the book gets on the device. How each format is rendered has its own peculiarities. And relies on what is in the book. Which means if the book sets a font size, that is what you will see.

Exactly how small is to big? From your screenshot, I would have to set the fonts size to about a quarter of the way along the font size from the left. And the minimum size is still readable, but, not practical for me to use. I am doing this on an Aura ONE, but, the differences are minimal.

But, what firmware version do you have? As I said, there have been changes in how it works, but, there should minimal visible changes. There might have been something in one of the released versions that was a little different, but, it was either a version specific to one of the new devices, or short-lived.

The renderer for Pocket articles is probably based on the kepub render. I think the font sizing matches, but, in both cases, it can be changed by what is in the book/article.

What I meant I never explicitly converted anything from epub to kepub, and given those books are not from Kobo's store, I do not expect them to be kepub inside.

I am on patched 4.30.18838, but I never applied any of the font and font size related patches

I guess you are right. Moving the slider all the way to the left produces the font size on the verge of legibility. The 1st screenshot is the same as above, just to show the position of the slider. The second one is the same book with the font size I consider normal. The 3rd is a Pocket Article at the same setting, which is too small IMHO
