Now that we've derailed the thread...

If your Kobo is still an off-line only device now, you should be certain to make a back up of the Dictionaries. they are found in the /.kobo/dict folder of the device. It is very easy to delete them by accident. (They can be downloaded manually if you know the URL, if necessary.)

I hope you know that you cannot purchase eBooks from kobo without an account. Where do you plan on getting your eBooks?

No, you cannot sync books without an account. Kobo does allow books to be downloaded from the store and sideloaded. And of course, that will give them epubs, which, as you have so frequently mentioned, render better than kepubs.
