The GlowLight 3s screen and the way it feels in my hands still makes it worth it for me. And I'm going to keep bugging them about the font size selection (the rest doesn't bother me). I'm disappointed that the GL4 lost the dark screen — though I normally read it with the Night Light at less than half anyhow. Still the GL3 and GL+ (7.8") were unique in their "orangeness." They also had the LEDs at the top, like my old PocketBook PB615. (I think all the Nooks had LEDs at the top — I don't know if the new one followed tradition or not.)

I understand how to patch Kobos, I just lost the desire to do it. Too many upgrades, too much tweaking. I want to use my readers for reading, not patching. Besides, most of the patches I cared about were incorporated into the official Kobo software anyhow.

Same goes for tweaking Android readers. It's nice that it can be done (looks like it can be done easily with the Nooks), I just (personally) don't have any interest in doing it — that's why I don't have any interest in the Android eInk tablets/readers.

Now, if I could just get B&N to add that one font size (between positions 3 & 4) the GL3 would probably be my favorite reader.

Dunno about that. I don't install every update on my Kobos, just the ones I want. I updated my Libra H2O maybe twice or thrice a year. Also I'm not the type to waste time on endless tweaking. Once I have everything as I want, I very rarely touch anything in the settings again. That goes for the patches also. I have specific patches I want and my preferences tend not to change. And no, those patches haven't been incorporated into the firmware.

But the thing is, I have to have my requirements met, else it's like a low-level toothache constantly gnawing at me. Alas, Nooks don't meet them. Kindles do just barely.

My main requirements are a good clear screen and dark, high contrast fonts. The Nooks (GlowLight Plus, 6" and GL3) meet those requirements. My only issue with the Nook is the lack of one font size choice in the "normal" range. If I ever get that I'll be very happy with the GL3.

Another thing that was very important to me was built-in ADE (PocketBooks, Tolinos) but with the new DeASCM plugin for Calibre that's not as important to me. (I still like the feature, but DeASCM in Linux means not having ADE for Linux is no longer an issue.)

As for Kobos, I like them fine. Just not interested in keeping up with patches.

You might like the diagnostics that are here. You need ADB to start it:

I've had several updates after the contrast-messing one, but the contrast is still worse than it was before.

Perhaps I didn't get the fix for some reason.

What email address did you use? I've been looking in vain for one. Maybe a deluge (okay, likely a trickle) of emails requesting similar updates to the software (more font sizes at the lower end of the scale for instance) will get through.

When the GL3 came out, I dug up the (then) CEO's phone number and called to complain about the partitioning for sideloading.

Yes, yes. But the point of my post is that I like the default Nook software. I just wish there were patches like what Kobo has.

That's something B&N did a while back on their GlowLights. I don't have any clue why, but I've gotten used to it.

Over time I've noticed I've been drifting to using my Nooks more and more. There's nothing wrong with my Clara, yet I mostly use it for nighttime reading. During the day, going out and about I'm more likely to snag my 6" Plus or even my ST.

The software is basic, but it does what I need and I really enjoy reading on them.

I'd still like to see a campaign to have B&N add a few things to their software, mainly because they are things that have annoyed users for a long time.

I'm lucky that font size 4 works just fine for me (if there were a 3.5 I'd certainly try it out though) and Georgia works just fine for me (though I'd be happy to see custom fonts added).

I'd like to see series and shelves editable by Calibre. The truth is I don't do much with it on my Kobo. It's mostly just knowing Nook can handle series yet I'll never see it.

In library view I really like the author stacking. Sort by author is my default view. I'd love to open the Stephen King stack and see a Dark Tower stack. Nook can do that. But only if you bought your books from B&N and only if the metadata is correct there.

I'm just using the support address and asking them to pass it along to development.

I don't know if that will do any good. I always get an email back saying they passed it on to development. I can hope any way.

I'm using my GL3 for my current book. I think because I find the bigger bezels more comfortable to hold. But, like you, I've gotten nothing against the Clara. For me the GL3's warm light screen outshines all the others I've used. Somehow more comfortable on my eyes.

I'm guessing somewhere in the software there's a tag defining the links as a color other than black.

My current book has h2 tags (for the 'books') and h3 tags (for the chapters). The h2 links are black. See attached photo (and please forgive the bizarre color correction. My GL Plus has a white bezel. Why it's yellow in the photo is a mystery.

I'll give it a whirl. I've thought of reaching out to the GoodEreader guys to see if they had anything.

When I called the CEO before I actually got a callback from his secretary and she spoke to me for a good fifteen minutes or so. Not long after the released the update changing the sideloading partitioning
