@Renate
1) Check my Edits of the last email! 2) I have Nova Launcher installed. Can access settings there, too! 3) Without rooting, I can install pretty much whatever I want and it runs. The hardware is MUCH better than the GL 3. Edit: I have a browser installed. EInkBro. It's a bit slow but usable. Last edited by downeaster59; 12-09-2021 at 07:07 PM. |

Received the GL4, have some Nook books on there that I've purchased, and did some reading.
The hold down the home "n" button is how it has been. I guess I was curious if the behavior was different based on the wording the GoodEReader article had. I'm liking the buttons and placement! Not a lot of force needed. I'd say less force than what you need for GLPlus buttons. There is an audible click. I'd say the click is a little bit more of a hollower audible click sound than Oasis buttons. It's pretty much on par with how loud the GLPlus is, though maybe a smidge louder. It is definitely snappier than the GLPlus. Tapping on books to see details at the store is faster. If you're a GLPlus owner, you'll know that when you tap a book to start reading it, you have to give it like 3-5 seconds, where the screen will do a full reset, it'll show the previous page real quick, reset, then go into the book with usually some loading buttons showing for a sec. For the GL4, I don't get this behavior. I'll tap a cover, then the loading buttons will show for just a sec before the book text shows. It's still slower than competitor eReaders. It's not Oasis-fast in terms of tapping menu items or inputting text (like your WiFi password). I'm slightly disappointed with the "soft touch finish"? It's very much a softer touch than, say a Voyage or a Boox Nova device. But it feels a little bit more "plastically" than what the GLPlus feels in hand. That being said, I still enjoy the feel more than other eReaders, but thought I'd mention it. Could also be there's more of a ledge with the GLPlus to hold on the bottom, which has more surface area to feel the soft touch finish. Display text looks nice and crisp! I do believe I see a noticeable different in how crisp the text looks when reading. |

The USB has a Type C connector, but it seems like it's USB 2.0 HS. (Scroll to the far right.)
Code:

I'd like to see a picture of the 3 next to the 4. Though really, I wasn't one of those that thought the 3 was too large.

KOReader works fine on the GL4. I've submitted a log to have this device recognized by Calibre.

Did they move the LEDs down to the bottom also? I've attached comparisons of the PocketBook HD 3 and Kobo Clara HD. In all cases the screens are darker than the pictures show — but there's a huge difference. Looks like the Nook GL3 and GL Plus (7.8") are going to be unique in the world of "warm" screens. |

Okay, I've figured out the storage riddle. When you connect the Nook GL 4 to a Mac or PC, what happens is that a folder named spsd opens, and you see the contents of that folder on your Mac/PC (but not the spsd folder itself). That folder is 5.36 GB, more or less. If you enable developer options, install a launcher and then install a file manager, you discover that spsd is one folder in Storage and you can access all of storage for apps and books, without root.
That said, one benefit of root would be to allow the page turn buttons to work for third party reader apps. |

Aw, is that UMS? Do you really want to use that? Doesn't MTP (which I don't particularly like either) give you access to more? Why not ADB? You can see /sdcard.
There's a bunch of weirdness with this device. I'm trying to make a rooted recovery. For some reason fastboot can't directly boot an image correctly. Fastboot also presents as VID/PID 1f3a/1010 which is not recognized as a stock Fastboot. You have to install a driver for it. It's basically a generic WinUsb but unless the class GUID is GUID_DEVINTERFACE_ANDROID the stock Fastboot won't find it. You need to take an Android INF file and add 1f3a/1010 to it and install it as an unsigned driver. In Linux there should be no problem as it doesn't use device class GUIDs. |

I haven't dug down as far as you have yet, but I've found some weirdness of my own. Some apps will not install through adb install. Terminal just hangs. I need to copy the apk to the Nook, use a file manager, select "open with" when I press on the apk, and then choose the installer. Then it installs! Previous Nooks had their own weirdness, as I recall. Edit: My Ubuntu VM terminal can connect with my Nook. That may prove helpful! Last edited by downeaster59; 12-10-2021 at 10:55 AM. |
