This feels like a fix, actually (as in, the device is now actively put to sleep, even while charging). Which should make it charge ever so slightly faster.

I would agree with this. I've always thought it was a bit weird that the charge level was being updated as it meant the device had to be awake to do the update. Updating constantly means it is awake constantly. Setting an alarm to update periodically, or when full would probably be better.

Given a choice of the new behavior or the "fix", I would chose the old behavior.

Periodically sounds fine, as long as no period lasted longer the 5%.

Weird...are you saying yours would previously keep updating the number all along? Don't know if it was just that there are always jumps in what percentage it thinks the battery is at, but I definitely never found it updated very often at all. I swear my glo would only update the percent charged a couple of times while charging after it had gone into sleep mode (ie when I hadn't kept it awake by reading) and I think the main difference I noticed with the KA1 was that the charging light would change colours depending on the level charged. It never bothered me too much, I would just check periodically for it to say 100% charged and kinda ignore any of the stages before that, unless I needed to take it off charge before then. But the few times when I wanted a full charge and was waiting until I could unplug it, I felt it updated the charged percentage very infrequently.

I tried my Glo HD earlier today, which has quite old firmware, and it seemed to update every 1%.

I'm pretty sure the Kobo has to be fully awake to charge regardless. The battery has no controller whatsoever. I thought the regulation of the charge is being done entirely in software.

I thought the battery controller was on the main board. In the case of the Forma, it is labelled as U16.

Having a battery issue with this latest firmware. Before updating I could get weeks of reading (an hour each night) before having to recharge… the first time after updating it discharged over night. Subsequent nights I’ve had to charge it - it lasts a bit longer each time but still not great. For instance, it went from 100% to 62% with 45 minutes of reading at 3% brightness.

Of course, this could be a total coincidence, that exactly when I update the firmware, the battery “fails”. But it seems unlikely that my batter just stopped working properly.

Every time I see something like this on my devices, it is because either there is a stuck background job eating cpu or it is stuck in a sync loop with the wifi constantly on.

Try turning off wifi and reboot the device and see if that helps.

Newer versions of the firmware actually seem pretty rabid about turning off wifi automatically, and it has helped battery life for me.

I’ll give this a try… though it’s already shut off twice and I need to charge it yet again. I presume a shut down due to power loss / charge / power up is different than a “clean” reboot? Wish I could see what processes are running (I presume there’s no way to ssh?).

No, if it boots with the 3 dots, its a boot no matter how it gets there.

The key though is turning off wifi first so it doesn't start a sync right after booting. And charge that battery!

That was it! I was away from home at the time, and so it could never connect to the network it is setup to connect to. Feels like… poor programming on their part, but perhaps there’s a subtle reason it has to be this way.

There's definitely something wrong with this FW. Two weeks or less after doing a factory reset, and it's losing track of time again and draining overnight, even with automatic sync turned off. And after being plugged in for five minutes goes from 1% to 100%, which suggests something isn't refreshing correctly. If it's left alone for a bit, it stops counting time until it's able to sync to WiFi, which is a problem if you're off WiFi for a while.

No CBZ files on the device, so I'm wondering if it's a Kobo Plus problem.

No such issues with the Sage or the Libra 2 here. And wifi is always off, I only connected once for registering.
