Problem downloading Kobo books to PC
I bought a few books from Google Play and Kobo. I had no problem downloading the Google Play books onto my Windows 10 PC today.

I've already obtained the Kobo books directly on my Kobo and Tolino readers, but want to download them to my PC as a backup.

If I try to download/open with Sony Reader for PC I just get blanks where the books should be. If I retry, Kobo says the book already exists in my library. If I try to download open with Adobe Digital Editions I get an error message "Error! Check activation!"

Anyone have any suggestions?

I haven't been able to download an ebook into my Sony reader for PC version 2.4.01 for ages, and have to use ADE instead. I guessed it was to do with the DRM being updated. What version of DRM is on the ebooks you can't open?

Because you probably need to strip the DRM. You’re getting kepubs which don’t use ADE thus neither Google or Adobe Digital Editions can read the file. If you Google Google Alf DRM you’ll find a link that has all the tools you’ll need

That doesn't make sense if the ebooks are being attempted to be downloaded directly from the kobo store. And that's what I thought


That's how I download my ebooks in any event, directly from the kobo store into Sony reader for PC, or ADE (and of late only ADE will allow for the download)


From there I open into Calibre

The books are legitimately purchased from Kobo, surely I shouldn't have to strip DRM from from those?

Either Sony Reader for PC or Adobe Digital Editions will open my Google Play store epubs.

Maybe I'll try the Kobo desktop software.

So I did some googling and read somewhere a suggestion to try deauthorizing and reauthorizing Adobe Digital Editions. I did that and was able to download the book in Digital Editions.

Downloading in the Sony software still didn't work, but the books can be imported into the Sony software once they were downloaded via Digital Editions.

I just go to my account (online, with a computer), click on My Books, then click the three dots (...) and find the option to download. In this way you get ePubs (.ascm files) instead of KePubs. From there you just open them in Calibre with DeDRM and DeASCM. (Or just use ADE if you're not using Linux.)

EDIT: I think in Calibre you can also Obok for backing up your files directly from the Kobo device.

It was after the 3 dots that I was having trouble. However, Google was my friend and I found a solution (see my last post just above yours).
