While ordering something online, I was given a choice between the cheaper standard shipping (14-28 days) or, for extra cost, priority shipping (14-28 days).

For years I've been having problems with my gas heaters. That if you turn them on higher than the pilot light they automatically switch off after a short time (unless it's really cold). In the past I've asked my father if there could be a problem with my chimney/flue. But that wasn't possible because it's a really big chimney/flue. I had my doubts.
A couple of months ago we got a new second hand gas heater for me and last week we finally put it in it's place. Since the gas heater in the living room need to be cleaned and checked my father called the gas guy who had a spot open on Saturday. He also checked and connected my heater. When he tested it by putting it on high it shut down. His conclusion: there's a problem with the chimney/flue. He gave my father the telephone number of a chimney sweep. My father tried calling once and got the voice mail. My father doesn't like leaving messages and hasn't tried calling again. When I told my mother I'm not expecting to have a working heater this winter she told me I shouldn't be so negative. I think I'm being realistic; after the fire it took my father a year and a half to replace the damaged gas leads to my room in the basement. And even if, by some miracle, my father calls, the chimney sweep pick up and is able to come quickly I expect it to be a bigger problem than a clogged flue. For at least 100 years only the most needed maintenance has been done on this building, that section of the building is old (1600s) so chances there is a bigger problem are high. I don't want to disappoint myself by expecting it will be fixed within a couple of weeks. I've got my Dyson fan/heater to keep my somewhat warm when I'm in my room and today my Oodie should arrive. But I'm hoping it will be a very mild winter. |

I'm sure that there are some sort of compensatory reasons for still living with your parents--but I find it remarkable that you would think that living with an unnecessarily cold room all winter is a requirement. Or hell...move out and get your own place. (assuming you're of age, of course.) Share an apartment with someone. Or a house. Anything. As someone who left home shortly after turning 17 (early grad) and never looked back, obviously I have a very different mindset about living in proximity to parents than you do, but...Jesus, you don't need to suffer abuse through negligence. It's 2021. Hitch |

Admitedlly, the last time I lived at home was when I was 16 and moved to a different city to start attending university so I may lack the mindset of someone who is still living at home. If I didn't take care of any issues that came up, there was no one else to do so. Well, when I lived in a co-op house for a while, there were theoretically others but most of them were pretty useless when it came to anything other than their school work and asking for extensions on paying their share of the rent and utilities. Moving companies are expensive. Moving company quotes are error ridden. Dates are wrong, addresses are wrong, home descriptions are WAY wrong.
Storage units don't prorate. 2 days = full month. Communication between realtors is terrible which = overall communication issues. Husbands get way over wrought and over think everything. Carry on. |

Because we're sure there must be a way we can FIX IT, darn it! ![]() As a wise person pointed out to me when we were buying our house: Real estate transactions are about the only time when your best friend is the lawyer. I've never heard "It's going to be a bumpy ride" communicated better. Last edited by ApK; 12-02-2021 at 05:48 PM. |

Our last move was fun that way since the moving company's estimators came in, checked all our furniture and packed up household goods and promptly sent a truck that would not come close to being able to hold everything. We ended up in a lovely conversation where we were refusing to pay over double the cost quoted to cover their screwup and they were trying to claim that it was our fault their guys misjudged the space needed for the move. I hate to think what would have happened if we'd been moving more than 5 km which would have made the second trip more of a pain. |

Perhaps I should be pleased my 750 mile move went as smoothly as it did. Yeah, I spent 3 months boxing up every last thing I owned that was small enough to fit in a box. Yeah, I paid $12,000 for the move. But it went well.
Barring the price tag, but it was long distance, and I wanted to ensure a competent team. So no regrets. |

Moving isn't an option for various reasons.
I asked for the phone number yesterday and that made my father call. And not the voicemail message says that the sweep has Covid and can't work for the foreseeable future. My luck. I asked my father to call our neighbour, he usually knows trustworthy workmen. I won't call myself because he and my father have been best friends since childhood and he and I aren't each other's favourite person, to say the least. If he doesn't know a trustworthy and good sweep we're going to call the company who is going to repair a section of our roof soon. Why not find a sweep on the internet? Apparently there are a lot of shady and untrustworthy sweeps. You're best bet is getting a recommendation from friends/family/acquaintances. For those informing: yes, I do have a carbon monoxide detector. My father thought it was me overreacting, but it now shows it wasn't. Luckily all my heaters switched off automatically before the detector was set off. |
