There are a lot of bug fixes and improvements in the change log, including incorporating pull requests on Apprentice Harper's GitHub that have lingered for months. Highlights include:
  • Support for the Readium LCP DRM ...
  • Issues with PDF files in Calibre 5 should be fixed (merged apprenticeharper/DeDRM_tools#1689 ).
  • Fixed tons of issues with the B&N PDF DRM removal ...
  • Issues with Obok key retrieval fixed (merged apprenticeharper/DeDRM_tools#1691).
  • Issues with obfuscated Adobe fonts fixed (fixes apprenticeharper/DeDRM_tools#1828 ).
  • Verify that the decrypted book key has the correct format. This makes it way less likely for issue apprenticeharper/DeDRM_tools#1862 to cause trouble.
  • If the Adobe owner UUID of a book being imported happens to be included in a particular key's name, try this key first before trying all the others. This completely fixes apprenticeharper/DeDRM_tools#1862, but only if the key name contains the correct UUID (not always the case, especially for keys imported with older versions of the plugin). It also makes DRM removal faster as the plugin no longer has to attempt all possible keys.
  • Add a more verbose error message when trying to remove DRM from a book with the new, not-yet-cracked version of the Adobe ADEPT DRM.
  • Added back support for Python2 (Calibre 2.0+) ...

In addition, a new pull request on Apprentice Harper's GitHub fixes the macOS problem where key retrieval fails on new installations of Kindle for Mac. So far neither Apprentice Harper nor noDRM has incorporated it into their plugins. If one of them does, it will be good news for Mac users.

ETA: noDRM merged the Mac key fix into their plugin, however they haven't released a new version yet and not clear when they will do so.

You say there's "no reason" but other than long term backup/archive, there are all exactly the same reasons: format shifting, space shifting, accessibility and all the other freedom-enhancing, fair-use, reasonable reasons we don't like DRM.

Okay, let me amend my earlier comment to say that I'm against removing DRM from borrowed/rented/subscription books for the purpose of keeping them or in the case of something like Kindle Unlimited where the author doesn't get paid if you don't read it with a Kindle device/app and DRM intact.

So I like that the Apprentices' tools have some speed bumps in that regard. I feel that their clear anti-piracy stance may have helped them to continue along for all this time without getting shut down.

Frankly, this is your problem.
"I'm lazy and careless" is not a valid case for stripping DRM or PI from ebooks.

I wonder if B&N DRM in general has been fixed? Lots of users say they are no longer able to remove DRM from B&N purchases downloaded with the Nook for Windows app. I haven't tried in a while.

I remove the DRM from library books. After reading I delete all files. I don't justify or make excuses for doing so.

The main issue with removing DRM from B&N purchases is locating the key. Once you have successfully done that, the process seems to work. I will admit that locating the key is a total PITA.

I agree. But not everyone is conscientious about using passwords on their phones or ereaders. There aren't any pat answers.

Not everyone can move to the US. So that's not valid. Bu buying a Kindle is something that doesn't have to be done. A Reader that works with library eBooks is something that can be purchased instead of a Kindle.

Sigh. This USED to be a useful thread. Clearly there are two camps here, and they won't agree or convince each other -- they're just churning the thread without providing any value at all to those of us who have followed it to keep track of updates.

How do you suggest that this discussion proceeds?

I've been wondering if 'someone' wants to discuss the matter of identification with the new person, and let us know back here the outcome.

Any other suggestions?

The last time I bought a B&N book, I couldn't remove the DRM. Digging showed me there was some file in the ePub that had to be moved from one location to another. But that was a graphic novel (in ePub format though), so I wasn't sure if that were true of all books and if so, how easy that would be to fix in the tool.

As for the key, when I bought my Surface and installed the Nook app from the Windows store, it seemed to work without any fiddling from me.

Not sure if others can confirm my experience. Maybe I was just very lucky?

I'd suggest that those who want to argue about the merits of removing PII as well as DRM go start a thread to argue about it. And let this long established thread that serves an actual real service to MR members (and lurkers) go back to reporting new versions (of both, if you wish). But I'm not a moderator, so I can't just yank this whole digression over into a new thread.

Does NoDRM handle Print Replica (the latest version of DeDRM does not, apparently it got dropped when Python 2 support was dropped)?
