I like that the old tool contained personal information. I have told several people about Calibre and Apprentice Alf, and also included a warning against sharing books as personal information is still discoverable. I would not want to be responsible for someone going rogue.

But my 89 year-old aunt was complaining her library book was taken back when she only had a few pages left. Long ago, I had a pbook that was due at the library, and only had a few pages left. The librarian asked why I just didn't keep it longer and pay the fine. I said I thought incurring a fine made you a bad person.

Obviously, she had no response to that.

Kindle formats: The EXTH 208 Watermark metadata.

EPUB format: Adobe ADEPT watermarks, Kindle watermarks (in converted books), and the Tolino cdp.info file.

(There may be other cases that I failed to find looking at the changed code.)

Well i find it curious that no personal info is retained as to the user (that is, the person who decrypted the ebook)
That seems to lessen the idea of the attribution of drm removal, it's still anonymous whether the apprentices tools are used or the new person's tools are used.

I appreciate the arguments given in posts upthread re the maintenance of what appear to be water markings etc, but the fact that piracy continues irrespective of such markings hasn't been a sufficient deterrent. (Perhaps a moral deterrent)

I also appreciate that some here have contributed enormously to assisting others with using the tools (and writing some of the tools), and appreciate that their concerns are very personal indeed.
However, as the de drm process is relatively anonymous now anyway, any deterrent factor hasn't been too seriously damaged it seems.

The personal information will tell who removed the DRM. You can't remove the DRM from someone else's book.

In what way does it reveal this information? I can't picture just what it reveals.

Don't give/share/upload copyrighted stuff to anyone else. Even if it had no DRM!

Even if it was a "free" special offer. Send the link to the official download. "Free" doesn't mean Public Domain if it's in copyright.

I see the flip side of the coin: these are "privacy-friendly additions." It logically follows from the decision to DeDRM the book in the first place, in which you are ALREADY violating the TOS of the seller in the belief that you have a right to "own and use the ebooks I buy on multiple devices," that the user also then has the right to manipulate the file as they wish (obviously to exclude theft, in this context). Including to maintain user privacy.

Wrong. It will make DeDRM more accessible to the masses, and make it easier to strip PII, a good thing IMHO. It's not automatically sufficient justification to suppress or not use new tech, merely because "it might be used for bad purposes." Of course it will be 'welcomed by pirates.' But it can also be used for people to truly manage and own their files, and use for their own (legimate/legal) purposes while still ensuring that authors get paid.
