Seriousness Most Users Day

At the bottom of the Forums page, under What's Going On it is stated:

"Most users ever online was 1,413, 01-23-2005 at 10:03 AM."

I've often wondered what happed to cause so many users to log in. I obviouly wasn't lurking that day, and though it may have been discussed else where,I haven't seen it. What was going on?

Update: Most users ever online was 1,442, 12-25-2009 at 03:58 PM.

It was soooo recent, but other than the obvious, I don't know why we have a new Most Users Day?
