I was going to say... I haven't noticed any blocks on the library books (Overdrive) either. I normally don't decrypt library books (usually read them on my Tolino or PocketBook), but sometimes the fonts and layout are so horrible that I change them to make the reading easier.

Not having tried it yet, in general my take is more developers contributing to OSS is better. On the options to strip user PII out of the ebooks, IMO that's a good thing. Like nearly all tech including the Internet itself, it can be used for good or ill. |

I gave it a quick try and it wouldn't remove DRM from Adobe epubs. Went to see if I could put in a bug report and version 10.0.1 had been released a couple of hours earlier which corrected that issue for me.
As for comments about forking code and/or taking over code, a lot of OSS I use only survived since someone took over the code when the original programmers were no longer interested, lacked the time to maintain the code or ran into real life issues. |

I'm curious whether Apprentice Harper will drop out now that noDRM is actively developing the plugin. And will Apprentice Alf's blog continue to be updated with noDRM's releases, or will it fade away? Will people who post on Alf's blog or Harper's GitHub — or even MobileRead — with 7.x problems be referred to the 10.x versions of the plugin developed by noDRM? I suppose this is more a support issue than anything else. In any case, I appreciate that noDRM is bringing renewed energy and development to the tools (as I also appreciate Apprentice Alf's and Apprentice Harper's work through the years). KFX has locks in place for purchased KFX. So that's not really relevant. The KFX locks were not put in place by DeDRM.The locks were put in place by Amazon.
As far as I know, there have never been any locks on library eBooks put in place by DeDRM. |

The Apprentices have always made it clear that their tools were intended for purchased books only and that no attempt was made to remove personal information from the files. I'm happy to see the pending fixes merged in, but not the piracy-friendly additions. |

Judging by the long-time failures of the Github Actions CI checks on Harper's repo, I guessing there's some flagging interest there. I'm encouraged (from a trust standpoint) by the fact that noDRM has chosen to incorporate some of the stale pull requests from Harper's repo, but put me squarely in the camp that thinks making it trivial to remove personal information is a mistake. It will make honest (but uninformed) folk a bit more cavalier, and it will make dishonest folk rejoice.

Anyone in the dishonest camp already could do this themselves by pulling the source code, patching out the anti-piracy blocks, and building their own "custom" versions of the tools. noDRM does not give them anything they didn't already have. What it does do is raise a big red flag about piracy on the repo which will likely get it taken down as news of it spreads to publishers and they issue their DMCA takedowns. So I think either noDRM will put those blocks back in or the whole thing will get permanently taken down. |

I won't argue with your overall concerns. Except to note that assuming all would-be pirates are technically savvy enough to alter code might be a bit of a stretch. Removing that last speed-bump removes all the concerns of a willing (but otherwise incapable) wannabe pirate.
In my opinion, a github repo for the dedrm tools by Apprentice Harper was already a bridge too far in the "too mainstream" direction. Just as the consolidation of all the various tools into One Plugin To Rule Them All was a bit too far in making them too accessible to the masses, IMO. There's valid arguments for these sort of things being better left somewhat arcane and awkward to use (or find). *shrug* Last edited by DiapDealer; 11-20-2021 at 11:05 AM. |

Can you have both plug-ins installed at the same time?
