There might be people who are lucked out but if it’s needed by just a handful it might not be worth the investment in time and energy to do so.

Perhaps look at it from the perspective of those who can't use their current hardware identifying other solutions, like upgrades to hardware, using a virtual method, or getting another device that suits the purpose and their pocket.

Which is exactly the problem. Both you and @JSWolf seem to think this just happens magically. It requires someone to take the time to do it. To test it. To release it. To then support it when people can't use it. To support it when people decide to install it on the wrong version. Then there is the simple question of whether it will work at all. And does it support the extended driver?

Doing it for 4.23 is probably no issue. I don't think the driver has changed since then except to add new device and firmware support. 3.48 was released to long ago for me to remember.

And for the record, as I am the person who is probably going to do this, if you are not stuck (actually stuck, not just haven't gotten around to it) on one of these versions of calibre, I have absolutely no interest in hearing from you. It is not about you. It is about those who cannot use calibre v5. And to be honest, it's much more likely to make me not do it. Whereas a reasoned post like @RobertJSawyer's is much more likely to work.

Someone who has the skill set and understanding to do it. Which are honestly the only people who should be commenting on if they should or shouldn’t take their time to do it.

Everyone else, especially those who aren’t afflicted by having to use an older version, can and should simply move along. Else they make needless noise since they can’t speak to how much time it might take up, nor the effort needed.

Frankly I don’t personally care, but your comments of “the person should do it” have consequences for those who actually need the work to be done, and clearly not ones that would be to their benefit.

Clearly one who espouses such respect for others would understand and see that and act accordingly.

Well, "if it helps some people then why not", is clearly not reasoned, so it must not have been you.

And yes I do remember writing a post explaining the workarounds I could think of. And the possibility of another way if I considered the demand enough. That included some reasoning as to why I didn't want to do that work. So, I am clearly interested in hearing from people who have an actual problem with upgrading calibre to work out how many people would actually benefit.

What I am not interested in is hearing from people who have absolutely no involvement in the problem. You and @JSWolf do not have the ereaders involved, do not have the issues with calibre and do not have the skills necessary to solve the problem. That means that anything you say about it is wasting everyone's time.
