I rang my local JB the other day to find out when the Sage would be in-store. Unfortunately they said it would only be sold on-line. I've bought my last two Kobos in-store which was useful as my first KA1 had terribly uneven lighting and I was able to exchange it in person. Now I'm not sure what to do. I guess I'll wait to see if people are having any problems with them.

Thanks for pointing that out. Perhaps you can explain why the Kobo cover for the LibraH20 has an opening in the back allowing access.

Oh, by the way, it's a pain in a** when a restart is required, the cover must come off.

Not that it helps the masses, nor if the reader is frozen (though sickle should resolve this most of the time), but you can use nickelmenu to add a restart button, or power off button, even a sleep button should you wish.

My explanation is that Kobo changed its philosophy from the Libra H2O to the Sage? Maybe after the Libra H2O was released, they have more confidence in their sleep cover and firmware are good enough that powering down/up isn't necessary often enough to justify putting a hole in the cover.

Looking at the video reviews for the Sage, it looks to me like the cover snaps on and off pretty easily.

Here is the video, especially at the 4:21 mark:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D97H_nt9mkY

I can see how it would be a problem if you have something in addition to the cover (like a Kobo with a cover in a stand). But from Kobo's point of view, how often is this the case?

Please note, I am not a cover enthusiast or power off ethusiast, so my sympathy to cover users is limited.

My Sage arrived today. I haven't had the time to play with it properly, but my initial impressions are:
  • Ergonomics: Remarkably thin and light for its size. Not as light as my first gen. Libra, but still pretty comfortable to hold.
  • Contrast: much better than the Libra 1. About the same as my Oasis 3.
  • Frontlight: not good. Much dimmer than both the Oasis and the Libra 1, and without the warm light has a noticeable greenish cast. Also it's quite uneven and noticeably brighter on the button side. Still, you can see the unevenness only in a dark room, which is not how I normally read, so it doesn't bother me.
  • The bezel is a fingerprint magnet, unlike the Libra 1.
  • The pen: my Surface pen works perfectly. Converting handwriting to printed text also works perfectly, and my handwriting is very rusty these days.
I took some photos, but my phone automatically corrects colors, so I'm not sure how lifelike they are. I'll post a couple of them later.

All in all, I'm not jubilant, but not really disappointed either.

Thanks for this - it was the one thing I was most interested in. Like you, I don't read in the dark, so the frontlight issues are unlikely to be a problem. Your comparing it with a Libra 1 (my current ereader) was very helpful, hopefully I'll find out for myself in the next 24 hours or so

Does your phone have a RAW mode? if so, try that for the photos and then compress them from there if that works better.

Here are a couple of photos. I couldn't get them quite the way my eyes saw in real life, but they give some idea. The Sage is on the left, the Oasis 3 in the middle, the Libra 1 on the right.
