So "superfluous" means "absolutely necessary, must have now". Good to know.

calibre support

I have bumped the supported firmware version in calibre to 4.29.18730. This should be in the next release. There are no other changes needed for the support. Until this release is available, it is safe to use the "Attempt to support newer firmware" option in the drivers.

Also, the changes to recognise the Sage and Libra 2 were added to calibre a few weeks ago. That was included in 5.29.0 which was released on the 8th of October 2021.

Warning for non Sage/Libra 2 users

I have put this firmware on my Aura H2O. And it appears to work fine. But, a discussion elsewhere pointed out a potential problem.

The space needed in the root partition for this firmware package is over 200MB. This is significantly larger than the 4.28 packages for the older devices. On my Aura H2O, I have about 27.3MB of freespace in the root partition. The extra space is taken by the bluetooth and audio book related drivers and code. The size of the root partitions on the Elipsa, Sage and Libra have been increased to handle this. I assume they have simply doubled it from the previous 256MB, but, can't check until I get one.

The problem is that this might not be enough space for unpacking larger books. I don't know at what point this will be a problem. Or if it will affect different formats more than others. But, it could be a problem for any format. It might also be a problem when importing new books. In that case, it could be a problem if a lot of large books were imported at the same time.

This should not be an issue when an update is issued for the older devices. The firmware update packages are built with only the drivers and libraries that are used by the devices the package is intended for.

As always, if you install a firmware update package that is not intended for your device, there is a risk, and you need to accept that.

Just checked my test Glo:
Code:
Filesystem Size Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/root 247.9M 243.0M 4.9M 98% /
Err... that's definitely cutting it a bit fine! Thanks for the heads up.

Is there any information about what is new in this version?

Just had a look at my Glo which is still on 4.28. That shows:

Code:
/dev/root 247.9M 178.8M 69.1M 72% /
And the Clara HD is:

Code:
/dev/root 239.9M 170.0M 65.9M 72% /
The Aura H2O is now:

Code:
/dev/root 247.9M 220.6M 27.3M 89% /
I had just turned the Glo on. It might be worthwhile rebooting or checking where the space has gone in case it was left over from before. Or related to whatever you last opened.

And when the update is released for the older devices, anyone who has used this package probably should do a full factory reset. I don't thing the install will remove the extra files.

Note in my case, I also have NiLuJe's stuff installed on my Glo, so that uses a bit of space as well.

This firmware is specifically to add support for the new devices, and audiobooks. There are probably Bluetooth related fixed that would apply to the Elipsa.

Other than that, I can see some changes for annotation in the database. They probably won't be noticeable to anyone who doesn't look at the database.

And I know of one other fix that will help some people. I was told that the problem that was causing lots of corrupted databases after reading comics has been fixed. I have done a little testing and so far have not had a single corruption from this. Before, it was happening more than half the time.

Thanks to some help from @sherman, the patches for 4.28.18220 and 4.29.18730 have been released.

That would explain it. You can probably safely delete some libraries from /usr/local/Kobo that are for the not needed on the Glo. That would be "libfsdk_linux64.so", "libiink.so" and "libMyScript*.so". If they are missing, it shouldn't break anything.

Of course, if it does break it, I'm sure it wasn't me making the suggestion

I'll probably just factory reset, and go back to 4.28.18220. It's my test device after all.

Note that, outside of the git package, my own stuff should have a very minimal footprint in the rooçtfs (IIRC, a couple megs at most). The git package, on the other hand, eats a ~10MB chunk.

Definitely something to look out for, thanks for the heads up .

Upgraded my Kobo Touch yesterday and, well, I'm happy with the stability improvements. I can access the external SD where I have my own ebooks (well, yes, I have a program to download from different gutenbergs and generate books).

+++

The SD was automatically detected without me having to unplug and plug in again :-)

---

The reader still doesn't access the smallcaps part of the fonts when requested,
The German dictionary still has a couple of quirks with hyphens in composed words.
