I understand they have to stay in business, but this artificial limitation seems dirty. Is the handwriting transformation done on device? If so this seems even worse. I don't mind paying a flat fee to unlock features on the devices, or pay for cloud services that are actually services. This seems a poor strategy. |

Hmm. I was considering a Remarkable as a PDF reader, but this rather defeats the object. If you don't have a subscription, are you able to get notes onto a desktop via wi-fi or USB and run the OCR there?

A company that will probably be in trouble. Or perhaps it already is? "My Deep Guide" thinks this subscription plan is absolutely "horrible". |

I don't like this move by Remarkable, but there's one thing Liliputing left out of the article. According to their website, if you sign up for and pre-pay a three month Connect subscription ($23.97) that drops the price of the device itself to $299. Nevermind, I'm the idiot. I didn't finish reading the article! Last edited by ChrisHistorian76; 10-14-2021 at 01:15 PM. |

i think that reMarkable could expand its user base much better by adding features that are standard on other readers such as better handling of epubs (not sure if epubs are still converted or supported natively), adding native support for other standard and open reading formats (txt, html, rtf, cbz, cbr), as well as adding support for image formats (png, jgp, gif, bmp, tiff). then add suport for using our own cloud storage services + webdav + ftp. of course, this would make it not just a niche device favored just by note takers alone, but by a much larger audience. they grow with a larger user base and would not need to charge a subscription fee to grow. they would be competitive with mainstream ereader manufacturers. they should also expand into offering various sized devices. and obviously, the added bonus of the device...the feature that gives it its advantage over all other readers, would still be its excellent note taking capability. |

I would probably buy a 7.8" version for reading epubs.

With Kobo now offering two ereaders of different sizes that both feature note-taking capability, the timing of Remarkable's move may well prove to be remarkable, but not necessarily in a positive way for that company.

true. but reviews of the note taking process in terms of latency, accuracy, etc., have always been more favorable for reMarkable.

Sounds to me like they're aiming for a corporate user base.

I'm not saying that it's a GOOD idea. It's just that businesses will pay a subscription fee (for Adobe, etc.) without blinking.

Of course we have no word yet on whether the Sage is better than the Elipsa in this regard. The fact remains that those interested in note-taking now have a choice - pay a subscription or own the functionality outright. Many will likely choose the latter even if the quality is not quite as good.
