I may be wrong, but I’d think Adobe’s cloud fonts are required to be obfuscated, and I thought Adobe’s font obfuscation was incompatible with Kindle. If that’s the case then that alone kills it, epubcheck or no.

Edit: I might learn to read one of these days. I hadn’t noticed that it apparently worked on a Kindle device, so I guess I’m wrong. Unless it was exported as a fixed-layout? Last edited by phillipgessert; 10-09-2021 at 01:16 PM. |

AFAIK, you're right (with the exception of fixed-layout, for reasons that elude me!), for everything. They will not pass ePUBcheck, and they don't work at Kindle, either. Or...I should say, you (used to) get an error message telling you that you can't use obfuscated fonts. @Monaghan: ARE you talking about cloud fonts, or fonts you purchased from Adobe's foundry and physically have on your computer???? Well, then, I guess that makes you a steely-eyed ePUB pilot, because I don't know anyone else--including the folks in my crews who've made thousands of the damn things--that can make an Adobe/Typekit cloud font scenario work for ePUBcheck OR Kindle. Seriously, I mean it.

Do you mind saying what fonts you used? Presumably, not fonts that are already available on Kindles, right? Hitch |

I was curious, so I doublechecked and found some Google fonts are available via Adobe as well. Perhaps those or other OFL fonts in the collection can escape the Adobe obfuscation and thus render properly for a reflowable Kindle file.

Once subset, the fonts can be de-obfuscated from within Sigil, which lets the file pass EPUBcheck. It's a very straightforward process, which does lead me to believe I'm missing something blindingly obvious. It works with any font from Adobe Fonts that I've tried.

From a technical perspective it makes sense, other than that I suppose it's worth noting that the process undid something Adobe wanted done with those fonts, so I would just make sure you read the EULA/terms on em real carefully. Last edited by phillipgessert; 10-13-2021 at 08:05 PM. |

"They" whom? Who are the "they" that aren't using Adobe's obfuscation any longer? I wonder when the hell that happened. You mean InDD? No, that doesn't make sense, that's nuts, they're both Adobe products. Who? And I wonder when the hell this happened? Oh and OH YES, given that Adobe was the plaintiff in the infamous Adobe Systems, Inc. v. Southern Software, Inc. case, I'd be exceedingly careful, indeed. Don't give it another thought. One simple instance of pronoun confusion ("they") that's all. I thought that you meant a generic "they," like, "they, Adobe, didn't obfuscate the fonts..." which is why my head was doing a happy Exorcist Dance. :-) But alas, that's not the they that you meant or that Monaghan meant, sadly. Thanks. Hitch |
