There is a long thread a while ago discussing listening vs reading. I think it was triggered by a statement somewhere along the lines of "listening is the new reading". There were lots of arguments about whether listening to an audiobook was the same as reading an ebook/pbook. I'll admit that at the start of the thread, I would have said they were different. But, now, I tend to think that while the process is different, the end result is close enough that if you said "I read x books last year", including audiobooks in that number is reasonable.

Of course, I would be annoyed if you said "I am currently reading..." when you are actually listening to an audiobook. I am sure that the end result is the same, but, the action is not.

Obviously this is not the first time this has come up. I guess I've missed most of it (thankfully).

To me the result would be different simply because I learn better visually. It's probably closer to a defect in me than a plus, but it is what it is. But, like you, I wouldn't have any problem with someone saying they were "reading" a book if they were listening to it.

My daughter simply will not read eBooks. She reads about five times faster than I do and I keep trying to sell her on the benefits of eReaders — but it's not going to happen with her. Zero interest. People are different and I think that's good. I've never understand why some people seem to feel a need to turn their preference into the "one true way." Especially with something like reading preferences (or listening preferences). What works best for you is probably your best choice.

No, they are updates to the firmware. Some updates are to the common application software. Some updates are specific to devices. For example, the last update was a catchup for the other devices. But, it included changes that were only for the Elipsa. Kobo has always done this for new devices. They have a pre-release version for those getting review devices. Then a release-day version for that device only. They may then follow it up with some more if there are specific problems for the device. Then they release a catch-up version for all devices. After that, they tend to release to all devices, even if the changes are mainly for a single device.

With the Sage and Libra coming, it will be the same. But, I won't be surprised if the Elipsa is included in the release-day version and the follow ups.

Basically, if Kobo has a reason to release a fix or change for something, they will. And it won't matter if it is for one device or all.

Yep. "Read" has always had multiple meanings, as anyone who's taken any sort of text analysis class knows. (and "text" has multiple meanings too!)

Like you, my audio processing is distinctly inferior to my visual processing of print (or e-ink) - I read with my eyes because it's easier for me, not because it has some sort of inherent superiority or authenticity or makes me a "better" reader. I'm always completely bemused by people who claim that listening to audiobooks is child-like, or reading on easy mode, or things of that nature; just because for me audio takes a fair bit more concentration and effort.

One of my favourite podcasts had a blind guest on who is an avid reader. She routinely listens to audiobooks on 5x speed. My mind was absolutely blown. This is someone who has trained her brain to take the text in by audio at least as fast as I can read print. Humans really are marvels.

So a proper darkmode can be expected for the current gen like the Libra h2o as the Libra 2 will have it? Or is this hardware dependent?

Not sure where you got that from. But, no. To get Dark Mode working well, it needs waveforms. These have not been created for the older devices. And it is unlikely that they will be created.

My problem with audiobooks is not only a problem of capacity: I hate TV news feeding you pap they choose, as well as the time they spend on each item, and much prefer newspapers or other reliable news sources, whether paper or digital, where I can skim most items, and read others, with now the Pocket option for those I want to read later.
For me it is even worse with audiobooks: I have very many different reading modes, often not reading linearly, nor with the same concentration on each page. And with ebooks, I can easily look up characters I've forgotten about, or notes, or dictionaries. But I do still read some paper books when they are best suited to the nature of the work, or not available otherwise.

I take it that was your sarcastic way of agreeing that Kobo's devices sold in Germany do handle CARE/LCP DRM.

I did notice your device list but since neither the Forma nor Elipsa are officially sold in Germany, complaining about them not supporting local needs is much like me complaining that my tenant's Toyota Harrier is a right hand drive.

Just finished Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary. Fantastic story to help pass the time while I work on mundane garage and honey-do tasks. It doesn't bother me in the slightest that some people on the Internet don't think of it as "real" reading.

this is exactly the feature i wish all readers had. while reading, i would like the ability to also listen to it. i used to own an older model Boox large ereader that has that ability (TTS - text-to-speech). the more senses an activity engages, the better you remember it.

My PocketBook Touch HD3 has that feature. I've used it a couple times when my eyes were tired but I wanted to finish out a chapter. I always worry, however, that Bluetooth will kill my battery.

I want to try audiobooks so I wish they had included a headphone socket so I don't get COVID while using Bluetooth. Bluetooth 5.1, 5.2 & 5.3 are obviously new variants of 5G!!

S*^! just realized if the book had a virus I would get it anyway....!
