And where did anyone say audiobooks were "not real?" What I said is that they're different. For me it was just a sentiment, mezzanine actually mentioned some authorities on the subject.

When I was a kid, every night our father would have us (my two brothers and me) gather around and read aloud together. If we had more than one copy of the book we would follow along while someone else was reading. Reading was an integral part of our lives. If I'm holding a book in my hand it's already "revealed" to me. If I have a thumb drive with an eBook copied to it but no device to "reveal it" — I don't really have a book. So there is definitely a difference. This wasn't meant to be controversial, just a simple statement of fact. Both are real, but definitely different.

So no, given that I currently notice the weight of my H2O pretty much all the time, I don't think I would somehow stop noticing the weight of this device.

I'm super disappointed in this announcement. There I was hoping they'd expand their flexible-substrate offerings down into the Libra size range, not abandon them altogether.

Don't know what I'll do next.
unfortunately none of the ereader manufacturer's seem to be interested in a flexible/plastic-substrate. they must have their reasons. it would be nice to know what they are.

Considering your location is in Germany where Kobo does not sell ereaders under the Kobo name? You could look at their Tolino ereaders which do support LCP/CARE DRM. Then come back and whimper that Kobo doesn't care about European libraries.

To quote from EDRLabs website:

Quote:
In Germany

Die Onleihe is the main e-lending solution in Germany. Since 2019, German titles are LCP protected via a solution provided by Vivlio. Library patrons access these LCP protected publications on their Tolino e-readers. More than 25.000 LCP licences are generated each day.

Note: Tolino is a brand name of e-readers and tablets marketed by leading booksellers in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The technical solution is operated by Rakuten Kobo.

Uh, yes. But these are generic platform-wide updates. The main feature of the Elipsa (or at least the one most heavily featured in marketing material) is the stylus support. The software side of that still feels like a beta test, and that's me being generous.

A feature which has now been extended to their flagship ereader, and judging on previous features one which we'll see come down the line in later devices. So again no, I rather suspect that stylus improvements will continue to be made.

Something about this topic seems to elicit an intense emotional reaction within people that I wouldnt have anticipated.

Most societies eventually moved from a roman numeric system (ie: vii = 7) to an arabic numeral system because of the advantages associated with the arabic system when doing math (and other reasons). Im sure there were folks denying the advantages and crying cultural genocide when that took place, too.

Fascinating to observe, though.

Maybe because your so much more valued opinion could come accros as ableist?

To go back to the Kobo topic, my Libra decided to die (can't keep a USB connection to transfer books, it disconnects randomly and very quickly).
It's still less than a year old, but I quickly started the replacement process with Kobo. Will see if it arrives before the Sage

Funny how quick people are to try to shift goalposts to a moral criteria when this is a basic and well-established argument about the historical social adoption of technology. Says a lot about our current culture.

So far we have cultural genocide and discrimination based on disability. With absolutely zero evidence of being connected to an argument anyone has made. Just pulled out of nowhere. Seems like a rhetorical method of avoiding actual argumentation based on reason.

Also fascinating to observe is the way you incorrectly shorten the name of the numbering system you praise. Arab scholars modified a system they imported, including the very important zero. Hence the PROPER name (and your posts lay claim to being concerned about getting things right) is "hindu-arabic numeral system". FTFY, NPYW

Super important semantic distinction to the conceptual point I was making. Definitely not meaningless nitpicking to avoid discussing the actual argument.

I have to imagine an impartial outside observer would find this whole discussion bizarre.

Why not try not being condescending and going back to the topic of the 2 new Kobo devices?

You’d be right since at no point here has anyone in this thread said audiobooks aren’t real books.

All that’s been said is they are different. I’d be surprised if anyone can show them to be the same process. Though the end result may be relatively the same.

Maybe because you're on 39 posts? There has been a very long and ongoing discussion about audiobooks and "real reading" in these forums.
