To answer the people asking about the patches, I just haven't had enough time to really work on anything at all recently (see my GitHub profile's activity chart). In addition, @jackie_w is currently taking a break from working on the patches to deal with other issues at home.
I need around 7-8 hours of continuous time to do the extra updates and testing required for this version. The non-font-size-related patches are working and can be found on GitHub in the src/versions/4.28.18220 (I'll do an interim release if I can get a bit of time soon -- I'd usually do that, but the timing wasn't optimal, so that didn't happen as soon as it usually would). I probably won't have any time to do the updates until next Sunday at the earliest. I will have time before mid-October, though. I apologize for any confusion this situation and my unusual inactivity has caused. ___ TLDR: The patches will need ~7-8 hours of work (it's usually under 30 minutes), but I haven't had time yet, and @jackie_w is unavailable. I've been unusually busy and will finish these as soon as I can find the time, but for now, the patches in the src/versions/4.28.18220 on GitHub (everything except a few font-related patches are there) will work. P.S. Due to the work which has been put into making kobopatch reliable and compatible over multiple firmware versions, it's generally safe to use patches from older versions if they apply and don't warn against doing so. The worst that will usually happen is a patch might not do something, and in some rare cases, it may cause a reboot when accessing related functionality (which can be fixed by reinstalling the firmware). In fact, most of the initial testing we do comes from installing the previous version's release and seeing what sticks. With the last few versions, only 3-6 patches have required manual updates, and most of that was just finding offsets that kobopatch isn't yet smart enough to find by itself. P.P.S. Regarding NickelMenu, the only thing which really needs updating is the dark mode functionality. My test build in the NM thread will work after re-opening the reader. I will finish up with this feature next time I have ~2 hours to work on it (I need to figure out how to make the ReadingView reload the settings). Note that NickelMenu is fully compatible between versions (more so than the patches as long as the navigation UI isn't redesigned). Last edited by geek1011; 09-29-2021 at 03:25 PM. |

i just recently got a Kobo Libra and the first and dumbest thing I did was to upgrade its FW hahahahahaha.
I did not know that there is a patch that i can use. so that is that. Looking forward to a patch that will work in the latest FW. I am primarily interested in getting to have the options to increase boldness of custom fonts. |

Unlike some other ereaders, Kobo does allow you to roll back firmware though going too many versions back can result in issues with database changes. |

Edit: might as well ask these questions here: 1. Is kobopatching in a way similar to nickel menu? 2. If not, can I use nickelmenu after patching? 3. I don't get the instructions fully in the patches part, how will the patches be run/enabled? 4. can i just run a few select patches? how? Thank you Last edited by Deobulakenyo; 09-30-2021 at 03:09 AM. |

Even then, NM would work in all other aspects even with that particular patch enabled. There's also little need to have both enabled, and NMs toggle will be much more accessible once Geek figures out how to get the reader to reset to enable it from within the book. As it is you'd have to exit the reader to switch it. |

and i hate to be e total noob but i am. I downloaded the patch and unzip it trying to look at the files and understand them. is there some sort of a config file where the individual patches can be turned on or off? Last edited by Deobulakenyo; 09-30-2021 at 11:43 PM. |

You can either enable or disable the patches in the individual source .yaml files in the src directory or you can use the overrides section in the in the kobopatch.yaml file to control them from one location. See the spoiler below for a sample of the overrides. Spoiler:

Wow this is very helpful indeed. THANK YOU VERY MUCH! as i am only interested in getting the advanced option for custom (sideloaded) fonts because i need thicker fonts for my ageing eyes, will that particular patch work on my fw 4.28.18220 (as i do not want to downgrade my fw for fear of messing up). If this patch will work in my fw, does this mean i can use v71 of the patch that was intended for fws: 4.28.17623, 4.28.17820, 4.28.17826, and 4.28.17925 I checked pgaskin's github and this is the latest patch. according to pgaskins' 4.28.18200 patch posted here: https://github.com/pgaskin/kobopatch...l/pgaskin.yaml it contains this, so i am assuming the advance font feature is okay, however, the fw mismatch stops me from trying. can patching brick a kobo unit? Enable advanced settings for all fonts: - Enabled: no - Description: | This patch allows the advanced font options (weight/sharpness adjustments) to work with sideloaded fonts too. (KEPUB - OTF and TTF. EPUB - TTF only.) - ReplaceBytes: Base: "AdvancedFontSettingsController::loadView()" # font dropdown in advanced font settings dialog Offset: 132 FindInstBLX: {SymPLT: "N3FontTypeUtil::setupMonotypeDropdown(TouchDropDo wn*, QString const&)"} # monotype fonts only ReplaceInstBLX: {SymPLT: "N3FontTypeUtil::setupDropdown(TouchDropDown*, QString const&)"} # all fonts - ReplaceBytes: Base: "ReadingMenuFontSettingsController::setupAdvancedO ption(QString const&)" Offset: 112 FindInstBLX: {SymPLT: "N3FontTypeUtil::isMonotypeFont(QString const&)"} ReplaceH: 4F F0 01 00 |
