The Snake, the Crocodile and the Dog is the seventh in the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters. It has dropped to £2.99 at Kindle UK, which is its lowest price for many years. Also, the first title in the series, The Crocodile on the Sandbank, has been at £1.99 for more than a year, so if you are one of the two people in the world who haven't tried this series yet, here you go... And a number of other series titles are at £3.99, which is not too bad - although these are old backlist by now, they are very good old backlist - IMO, at least.

(And I love the covers of these C&R Crime versions too.)

The Cook of the Halcyon, the 27th in the Inspector Montalbano by Andrea Camilleri is 99p at Amazon UK.

Books in this series routinely rotate through sales, but this is the first time this particular one has been at 99p.

YW! I'll keep an eye out...it's a great series. And I like the continuation ones by Anne Hillerman too, and they go on sale more often, but I think you might like them more if you have read at least a good chunk of the original series first.

About a year later, again at $1.99 in the US. It's now the next-to-most-recent, since Someone to Watch over Me came out early this year.

Trial Run, by Dick Francis, has dropped to £1.99 in the UK today. Per SYKM, Trial Run was a finalist for the 1978 Gold Dagger award.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002RI9X3S
Kindle UK/Smile: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002RI9X3S

Spoiler:
Quote:
Ex-steeplechaser Randall Drew is reluctantly off to pre-Olympic games Moscow, as a favour to royalty. One of the blue bloods is destined to compete in the games and there are concerns - both of safety and of scandal - that only Drew, with his racing connections, can clear up.

On arriving - speaking no Russian and wishing he were back home - Drew is supposed to identify and contact one Alyosha to clear up the scandal. Instead, he finds himself tailed by the KGB and embroiled in foiling a terrorist plot - or die trying.

Home seems an awful long way away - and if he's not careful, he'll be going back in a box . . .

Packed with intrigue and hair-raising suspense, Trial Run is just one of the many blockbuster thrillers from legendary crime writer Dick Francis.

Books 10-14 in the Royal Spyness series by Rhys Bowen are on sale at Amazon UK for variously £1.99 or £2.49.

Description from the first in the series:
Quote:
My ridiculously long name is Lady Victoria Georgiana Charlotte Eugenie. Thirty-fourth in line for the throne, I am, as they say, flat broke. When my brother Binky cut off my meager allowance, I bolted from Scotland - and my engagement to Fish-Face (I mean, Prince Siegfried) - for London, where I have:

a) built a fire in the hearth - entirely on my own, thank you very much
b) fallen for an absolutely unsuitable Irish peer
c) made a few quid housekeeping incognito, and
d) been summoned by the Queen Herself to spy on her playboy son.

Less than thrilled with this last bit, I'm wondering what to do, when an arrogant Frenchman - who was trying to swipe our family estate! - winds up dead in my bathtub. Now, my new job is to clear that very long family name . . .

A Penguin edition is now £0.99 at Kindle UK. Note that Chandler is in the public domain if you are lucky enough to live in or visit Canada or one of the other few countries with similar copyright rules. The Long Goodbye (or Good-bye, as the case may be) won the 1955 Edgar for Best Mystery.

There's a lot of cheap Raymond Chandler books on Amazon, but I'm pretty sure they are pirate editions, based on the fact they use the original pulp covers and Chandler isn't in the public domain. The book I'm linking to is the legit edition.

I've really liked Gail Bowen's Joanne Kilbourn series since I picked up a few paperbacks while on a business trip to Canada many years ago. I had never seen a paperback - or hardcover - of hers in the US, although they may have existed. (They do require a bit of understanding, or willingness to learn, about the Canadian political system, since Kilbourn is a professor of political science and very politically active.)

In any case, I was happy when her e-books started becoming available in the US, and there are some omnibuses of early titles in the series that occasionally go on sale and make those early titles reasonably priced. Sadly, however, her middle-of-series titles tend to be rather absurdly priced at $11.99 and up, which is IMO kind of nuts for titles that are mostly years old. But I don't set the prices.

Now this morning, I got an email from Kobo Canada indicating that Bowen's newest title, An Image in the Lake, is on sale for one day only, today, for CAD$2.99. And when I went to take a look at it, I found that the two previous most recent titles are also fairly reasonably priced at CAD$3.99 and CAD$4.99 each. I have no idea if these other two prices are also today only, or more long-term.

A Darkness of the Heart (2018), CAD$3.99
Kobo Canada: https://www.kobo.com/ca/en/ebook/a-d...s-of-the-heart

The Unlocking Season (2020), CAD$4.99
Kobo Canada: https://www.kobo.com/ca/en/ebook/the-unlocking-season

An Image in the Lake (2021), CAD$2.99
Kobo Canada: https://www.kobo.com/ca/en/ebook/an-image-in-the-lake

And when I looked in US, I found that a few of these (two at Kindle, one at Kobo) are less expensive too, not as nicely priced as in Canada, but not $11.99 either!

The Unlocking Season (2020), $4.99
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B089TVSBCM/
Kobo US (couponable): https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-unlocking-season

An Image in the Lake (2021), $5.39

Whew!
