Abigale Hall by Lauren A. Forry is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
Amid the terror of the Second World War, seventeen-year-old Eliza and her troubled little sister Rebecca have had their share of tragedy, having lost their mother to the Blitz and their father to suicide. Forced to leave London to work for the mysterious Mr. Brownwell at Abigale Hall, they soon learn that the worst is yet to come. The vicious housekeeper, Mrs. Pollard, seems hell-bent on keeping the ghostly secrets of the house away from the sisters and forbids them from entering the surrounding town—and from the rumors that circulate about Abigale Hall. When Eliza uncovers some blood-splattered books, ominous photographs, and portraits of a mysterious woman, she begins to unravel the mysteries of the house, but with Rebecca falling under Mrs. Pollard’s spell, she must act quickly to save her sister, and herself, from certain doom.

Perfect for readers who hunger for the strange, Abigale Hall is an atmospheric debut novel where the threat of death looms just beyond the edge of every page. Lauren A. Forry has created a historical ghost story where the setting is as alive as the characters who inhabit it and a resonant family drama of trust, loyalty, and salvation.

^

Before 'It' came out in hardcover in 1986, I got a promise from my rep that he would send me an uncorrected proof. I then made plans to take the day off when it arrived at the bookstore.

And when it did, I remember fondling it with great care and then doing exactly what I had promised to do: Take the day off and start reading.

I still have my Uncorrected Proof, and it's in absolutely perfect condition inside and outside.

The photo below is not my copy, but one that I wanted Mobileread's members to see. Mine looks exactly the same. One of these days, I might even try to get it inscribed...

THIS IS A GREAT BARGAIN AT $2.99

Wow! I wonder how much it would be worth?

I don't like to rank things. But I think It is maybe SK's best book.

When I was in Japan they had the book, split in to four volumes. I was tempted to pick them up, just for fun. But I didn't want to haul them around Japan for three more weeks.

The Silence of Ghosts by Jonathan Aycliffe is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
Those who live in silence hear them best . . .

Dominic Lancaster hoped to prove himself to his family by excelling in the Navy during World War II. Instead he is wounded while serving as a gunner, and loses his leg. Still recovering from his wounds and the trauma of his amputation when the Blitz begins, Dominic finds himself shuffled off to the countryside by his family, along with his partially deaf sister, Octavia. The crumbling family estate on the shores of Ullswater is an old, much-neglected place that doesn’t seem to promise much in the way of happiness or recovery.

Something more than a friendship begins to flourish between Dominic and his nurse Rose in the late autumn of that English countryside, as he struggles to come to terms with his new life as an amputee. Another thing that seems to be flourishing is Octavia’s hearing.

As winter descends, sinister forces seem to be materializing around Octavia, who is hearing voices of children. After seeing things that no one else can see and hearing things that no one else can hear, Octavia is afflicted with a sickness that cannot be explained. With Octavia’s help, Dominic sets out to find the truth behind the voices that have haunted his sister. In doing so, he uncovers an even older, darker evil that threatens not only Octavia, but Rose and himself.

Jonathan Aycliffe delivers a disturbingly tense ghost story set in the middle of World War II during England’s darkest hour, demonstrating that some fears are timeless...
I posted another book with a similar synopsis, Abigale Hall. But what are you gonna do? It's a gothic trope.

One place (where I copied the image), shows a price of $1,895. However, I feel that amount is way overpriced. I'm guessing maybe just under $1,000. --- Here's a link:

I, too, think it's his best book. It's a wonderful, incredible, all-involving story.

That 4-volume split looks really intriguing.

The Devil's End by D.A. Fowler is $0.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
FOR SEVENTY YEARS, HE HAS WAITED...
In Sharon Valley, at teen slumber parties and around campfires, the story is told. Seventy years ago, on Halloween night, Nathaniel and Myrantha Ober made a pact sealed by bloody human sacrifice...a pact with the devil himself.
THIS HALLOWEEN, EVIL WILL RETURN...
Nancy Snell is the most popular girl in high school. She is beautiful and wealthy, and she has discovered the key to unlimited power. The occult force that was summoned to this sleepy town decades ago. She has already chosen the perfect victim needed to perform the ritual: the new girl in town, Lana Bremmers.
THE DEVIL'S END
Once again the town of Sharon Valley will be the doorway to the legions of darkness. And the devil will have his payment in blood, on an even more terrifying Halloween night.
Originally published by PocketBooks in 1992. I usually prefer the vintage cover (below). But in this case the goofy jack-o-lantern on the cover of the current edition is what grabbed my attention.

^ I'm glad you put that cover up because it looked familiar, even though I've never read anything by him.

I went ahead and got this. If it's cheezzy, all the better. Cheezzy and thick, like an abandoned pizza left on the floor in a dark room full of shifting shadows and scampering mice - a place where you have to walk barefoot upon splintered wood, unaware that you are about to step into something damp and squishy - and moderately warm - the dim greasy-reflective pepperoni orbs staring up at you as, unaware of the shifting mucousy gob of cheeze waiting to engulf your foot, you advance toward the yawning unknown.

That's the kind of cheezzy read I want.

THANK YOU!

This was both amazing and horrifying.

The book is also in KU so I grabbed it for my October lineup.

Speaking of cheezy, I'm converting an old horror PDF by Lisa Cantrell called The Manse. I've not read the book, but I've always wanted to based on the cover:

I'm planning on reading it for Halloween.

I wish they would release her books as ebooks, officially

Thanks for the correction on gender.

Lisa Cantrell is (was?) a very respected horror writer. I actually read this when it first came out in the mid-80s (and loved the cover), but I can't remember much of anything about it. Time for a re-read.

Maybe Valencourt books should get on these for Paperbacks From Hell?

When it comes to Halloween horrors, the old books I keep hoping for a re-release of are: The Manse and Torment by Cantrell and then Prank Night and Spook Night by David Robbins (who has released Hell-O-Ween as an ebook, so there's hope there).

Not that there's not already PLENTY of Halloween horror available. But I'll always take more.
