I've been having little luck trying to update calibre by using a custom implementation based on RFC2549 and RFC1149 as the IP connection. Any experts willing to chime in and offer advice?

Those were only proposals.

Send Kovid YOUR homing pigeons by truck and blank micro SD cards.

Packet loss due to hunters and raptors is a problem.

Or a micro SD card in a self addressed envelop if International Reply Coupons still exist.

Or find a library or friend with broadband.

To make it clear, by "auto" I didn't say Calibre should update the software without user's consent. It just meant "to automate", to let the computer do things that user chooses to do.
