I won't say "vacation" or "vacationing" is never used (National Lampoon probably also helped put a dent in that ), but "holiday" is, as you suggest, the word at least I would generally use. For work purposes, I might say "I'm on leave" if I've got time off, and, if going away as well, I would likely also then say I was going "on holiday" or "on a holiday", though "on holiday" I might also use even if I'm just having a break at home. From a school perspective, it's usually called "school holidays" (and "summer holidays" for the big one) rather than any reference to "vacation" at all.

"Vacationing" sounds awkward and...well, pretentious to my ear (not if used by someone from another culture like your own, but if an immediate, "local" friend or family member used it they would be laughed at and pointed at and derided and beaten with sticks and cricket bats and sheep entrails, and generally continually humiliated until they admitted that they weren't any better than us grubby, muddy, grunting, lesser apes).

'Course, that's just me saying this, and I don't pretend to be spokesperson for the linguists of Oz.

Cheers,
Marc (on permanent holiday)

Or, perhaps someone was vacationing in the area and their dog ran off (chasing something-- dogs do that, right?), and they couldn't find him before they had to leave?

I rather doubt it. First, because I called animal control here to have them come out and scan it for a microchip. There wasn't one, and no dogs that fit his description had been reported as lost in the area. Second, he is a year old and had never been neutered. Considering that it is possible to get an animal neutered for next to nothing, that speaks to someone very irresponsible just dumping a dog they no longer wanted.

He was filthy, covered in burrs and fleas, and looked like he had been out fending for himself for at least a week and maybe more. I am in what I think most people would term as a "wealthy" neighborhood, but we are surrounded on all by rather impoverished people in tumble-down houses, and then all of that is sort of in the midst of ranch land. So, it's more likely that the person just did the dump out in the country somewhere, and the dog just wandered into our area when he was trying to get water (we are on the lake).

But, it really doesn't matter. He's in a good home now, and the lady who took him knows that, if there are any problems, I will take him back and find another home for him. She is by no means financially well off, but she feels as strongly as I do about the rights of animals to have decent care and a bit of kindness.

I am currently looking over a thread where I've blocked a user. Weird all those empty white spaces. It looks like one of the first epubs I created...full of blank spots

I remember when I had to do that once. (There was someone posting non-work-safe images who just didn't seem to get the point when people objected.) It was a weird feeling.

I just don't like being told to f**k off by someone. I really think life is too short to actually keep reading the opinions of someone who makes that kind of statement in a discussion

If I'd known you could do that, I'd have already done it. I figured I'd just have to put up with said user's (and it may not be the same one as yours) ramblings til he got tired and left.

Who told you that? I might not agree with your viewpoints on piracy but I certainly wouldn't have said that to you (unless you were really really mean, but from what I read in that thread you were being a good boy, lol).

I'm just assuming it was that thread...

Hey, I'm one of the worst a**holes around here, and even I wouldn't say that to someone just because I disagreed with them.

Well it's forgotten now, and I can get quite rambunctious myself, I've even been known to call someone a 'mooncalf', but only after watching lots of WC Fields And now, at this very moment in time (barring reading MR) I'm watching one of my all time favorite 'silly' films. Love at First Bite, starring George Hamilton -- "Children of the night....shut up!!"

Glad you can forget it. I just read through the thread and I'm putting that guy on my ignore list as well. Anyone who can't control their mouth or their temper long enough to be even remotely civil in a discussion is not worthy of your attention, or mine.

That's said as someone who has been setting up networks, building computers, and being an attorney for way longer than he has been out of his jammies.

So .... onto the ignore list he goes. And, he can do to himself what he told you to do.
