Several people upthread have said really good things about Robert McCammon's historical mystery series featuring Matthew Corbett. (I'm quite embarrassed that I haven't gotten around to reading this series, perhaps because I still think of McCammon as a horror writer, and I'm just not into horror. But, given how much I like historicals, and given the recommendations, I really am going to bump it up on my TBR list...)

McCammon seems to come out with a new book in the series every few years; the seventh and most recent (2019) is Cardinal Black, which has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle US right now.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B099MCC6SN
Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B099MCC6SN

Spoiler:
Quote:
The year is 1703. The woman Matthew Corbett loves is rapidly deteriorating. A drug forced on her by criminal mastermind Professor Fell has destroyed her sanity. And the one thing that could save her—a book of potions—was stolen during an assault on the English village where she has been living under another name, an attack directed by a deranged man known as Cardinal Black.

Matthew is a professional problem solver employed by an agency in New York, but this case is personal. To save Berry Grigsby, Matthew will journey to London with one of Fell’s henchmen and attend an auction to which Black has summoned unsavory characters from near and far—all vying to possess the powerful volume. But before Matthew can obtain the book and heal Berry, he must survive Cardinal Black . . .

The “most intense yet” in the unique series that began with Speaks the Nightbird, Cardinal Black is a brutal and brilliant historical thriller from this New York Times–bestselling and Bram Stoker Award–winning author (The Florida Times-Union).

I really like Barbara Nadel's Inspector Çetin Ikmen series, and have been reading it (like several other series) from the time I used to buy paperbacks while on business trips to the UK, since the series was hard/impossible to find in the US. The most recent title in the series is Forfeit (2021), which is on sale right now at Kindle and Kobo US for $0.99. (This is one of those that I bought before doing the post, just to make sure I didn't miss out...)

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08NJJ6PH8
Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B08NJJ6PH8
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/for...n-mystery-23-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
GREED, LUST AND BETRAYAL LEAD TO MURDER in Barbara Nadel's twenty-third Ikmen mystery, as Ikmen and Süleyman work to uncover a tragic tale of dark secrets and double lives...

In the early hours of the morning, Turkish TV star Erol Gencer is found dead at his home on the outskirts of Istanbul. But he is not alone. Beside him lies a Syrian refugee whose stomach has been split open with a cheese knife. Did Gencer kill his guest before committing suicide, or are they victims of a sinister double murder?

The dead Syrian is soon identified as Wael Al Hussain, whose wife, Samira, is in prison for attempting to kill Gencer a year ago. At the time, no one believed Samira's story that Gencer's wife had planned the attack, but now Samira's sister begs Çetin Ikmen to re-examine her claim.

Meanwhile, Inspector Mehmet Süleyman is on leave with his teenage son, Patrick, who is visiting from Ireland, but when Detective Kerim Gürsel's transsexual ex-lover, Pembe, is also murdered, shortly after confessing that Wael Al Hussain had used her for sexual favours, Süleyman knows he must help Kerim solve this complex case.

Entering a world of the Syrian diaspora, where tales of mythical storytellers abound, Ikmen and Süleyman uncover a tragic tale of dark secrets and double lives where nothing is at it seems...

YW! I quite like Quartey's Darko Dawson series, the three I have read - I really love mysteries set in places I haven't been but can get a bit of a feel for from the background, while I'm simultaneously having fun with the mystery. I haven't read the two Emma Djan books yet, but hopefully sometime soon...

(My Smile goes to my alma mater...not sure what they will do with the pennies they get, since I mostly buy on sale, but I guess every little bit helps .)

Hush Now, Don't You Cry is the eleventh in Rhys Bowen's Molly Murphy series. It has dropped to $2.99 at Kindle US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00633PEH2
Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00633PEH2

Quote:
Molly Murphy is supposed to give up sleuthing now that she's married, but the murder of an alderman puts her on the trail of a killer.

Molly Murphy, now Molly Sullivan, and her husband Daniel, a captain in the New York Police department, have been invited to spend their honeymoon on the Newport, RI, estate of Alderman Brian Hannan in the spring of 1904. Molly doesn't entirely trust the offer. Hannan—an ambitious man—has his eye on a senate seat and intentions of taking Tammany Hall to get it. When Hannan is found dead at the base of the cliffs that overlook the Atlantic, Molly's suspicions are quickly justified, and as much as she wants to keep her promise to Daniel that she won't do any more sleuthing now, there isn't much she can do once the chase is on.

More than a year later, this is £0.99 again at Kindle UK. Sadly, the author doesn't seem to have written any more, or at least any more that have been translated into English. Fingers still crossed!

If you want to read my longer review of this, it's on my blog - see the address in my signature.

I believe this is the author's first thriller, and I hope he writes more. Oh, and the blurb says it was short-listed for the CWA International Dagger.

In any case, A Long Night in Paris (apa Unit 8200 in other languages than English) by Dov Alfon has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK again.

As usual at the beginning of the month, a big list of titles are on sale at Kindle UK. These should be mostly for the month, especially the ones at £0.99, but some may not be, so don't wait if there is a book you really want. Many are repeats, so check carefully before you buy. And, the list, as always, is mostly to my personal taste, together with a few authors I recognize, or that others have mentioned upthread, even if not to my taste :-). All of these are £0.99 unless otherwise indicated. No Smile links in here, because the post will be long enough, but for Smile, just replace the "www" with "smile" in the URL.

I also noticed a lot of P D James in the deal listing. There were a load of Adam Dalglish, and I recall seeing An Unsuitable Job For a Woman.. Prices were 99p and up. The main Crime Thriller and Mystery link is here: https://smile.amazon.co.uk/s?i=digit...v_bw_ct_x_ct00

Sorry, I don't have time to trawl through 28 pages and listing individual titles.

Yep, I had postponed until I had time to do a PD James-specific link to catch them all...I didn't have time to list individually either...

Here's a price-sorted link for PD James (sorry it's messy): https://smile.amazon.co.uk/kindle-db...SelectorHeader

There are a couple of short stories at £0.99, then a bunch of books at £1.19, a bunch more at £1.69 and then some at £1.99.

Sorry, I don't have time to trawl through 28 pages and listing individual titles.
