At 7 books per page (I prefer list view) I have 324 pages of books. I’m unwilling to scroll through so many more pages because someone thought it looked “better”. I’m just really happy I came here and read this before the update downloaded to my Kindles.

If you know what book you want, you can search for the author or title whether it's in the cloud or downloaded.

Yes, that’s exactly what I’d like to see, more or less. I see that also applies to the Kobo app (which in list view shows only 3-1/2 books! Talk about white space!). However in the app, at least, you can only apply one filter at a time. I think you need to be able to combine them (e.g. Unread AND Downloaded).

However I think my Started collection workaround will do for now, at least on Kindle. It won’t really work as well with the apps because there is no way to show only Downloaded items within the collection, which I would use to show items I’m reading on that device. You see everything, which is not the effect I am looking for.

Are you folks doing this update manually, or has it come through to your kindle? My update area is still grayed out on my 3 month old Paperwhite.

Except that I rarely know what I want to read next and like to browse until I find one that appeals to me. I am just not a fan of change for change’s sake.

I believe it was mentioned upthread but search is your friend. There are two ways:

1. Type into the search at top of screen (any part of title or author) and it will start to show a few matching results below that you can tap on, or you can select Search everywhere (this will include Kindle Store results if you are connected). Either way, it will open or download the book directly if you pick something.

2. Tap the page indicator in lower left (‘X of y’) and this will let you either jump to a specific page number or the page containing titles beginning with the string you type in (you need to switch to Author sort to use author string to jump to page). If you are in ALL mode it will include everything in your Kindle library of course.

Beyond that, I’m gradually finding less need to keep hundreds of books on device. I haven’t gotten around to actually deleting any of what I’ve downloaded since registering this Kindle, but most purchases I make now just go to my cloud and not to my Kindle until I’m ready to read them. If there were only a few dozen it would be enough reading for months and it would also be easy to find one by paging

I've never understood this need to constantly change interfaces. I guess someone has to justify their job. But there's something to say for standards and familiarity.

Me either. There's also the matter proportion. Wide white spaces and tiny fonts just doesn't make a lot of sense. (I hope the Voyage never gets this update.)

What is the deal with that? I think PocketBook has put out about 8 new eReaders since the last Kindle came out.

The thing is, Amazon's been quite a bit behind the curve when it comes to features for most of the last decade or so.

And there's not really much in the way of obviously features a single-purpose eReader could have that a Kindle doesn't have other than warm frontlighting on non-Oasis models.

Same. And each one of my collections had several pages of books, which now have almost doubled thanks to the useless wide white spaces. Not to mention the whole interface is a mess.
