Thanks! Do these have continuity, do you know? Ought I to read them in order, or are the characters different as well as the plots?

There is an overarching storyline, but it's not super critical IMO. Each mystery is a stand-alone, but the characters' lives progress throughout. So if you mind knowing who ends up with whom and how, or having a bit of the tension in the early books addressed, you should probably read in order, but if that isn't a huge deal for you, you're okay not....

There's now an anthology of the first nine books in this series going for free at Kindle US and UK. It went free yesterday, but I was really busy, and didn't get to post until today, so grab it fast - usually freebies like this are gone within a day or so. (Although possibly to repeat at some point in the future...) From SYKM, the first nine books were published 1990 - 2000, and then a big gap (11 years) before the next few. So I suspect that the rights reverted on the first nine...

The Jeri Howard Anthology: Books 1-9

Looking at eReaderIQ, it looks as if it goes free every few months, but never for very long, so grab it now if you want it. It has the first five titles in the series, so if you read the first one and like it, you're in luck - you have four more. There's also a second omnibus of later titles, and it goes free every now and then too, although not as often.

The Jeri Howard Anthology: Books 1-5, contains: Kindred Crimes, Till the Old Men Die, Take a Number, Don't Turn Your Back on the Ocean, and Nobody's Child (apa The Missing Child)

Cross-post to the main thread for info on the University of Chicago 75% off all e-books sale, on from Aug 16-23.

University of Chicago publishes the Judge Dee series by Richard van Gulik (loosely based on a real historical character), the first three titles in Margaret Doody's enjoyable Aristotle Detective (yes, that Aristotle) series, and a good chunk (maybe all) of Richard Stark's Parker series (Stark was a pen name for Donald E Westlake).

The Doody books go on sale for $1.99 from time to time, so you probably shouldn't get them directly from UChi via this sale. But the van Gulik books rarely go on sale, and I doubt you'll do better. I don't watch the Stark books, so can't offer an opinion on those.

  • The Chinese Gold Murders
  • The Chinese Lake Murders
  • The Chinese Bell Murders
  • The Chinese Nail Murders

£0.99 in the UK today as part of the daily deal. Remember if you live in Canada or one of the other few countries with reasonable public domain laws, this may be public domain for you (see Project Gutenberg Canada).

One of the great detective novels. It's densely plotted (perhaps too densely plotted; I had to read the book three times before I was sure I understood what was going on) and Raymond Chadler's narration is fantastic. He's one of my favorite writers.

Sleep Like a Baby is the tenth and most recent (although not all that recent, from 2017) in the Aurora Teagarden series by Charlaine Harris. This is Harris' first series, and it's more of a classic mystery series, without the paranormal background of Harris' much better known Sookie Stackhouse series. Baby has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Quote:
In Sleep Like a Baby, the next installment of the #1 New York Times Bestselling Charlaine Harris’s Aurora Teagarden series, Robin and Aurora have finally begun their adventure in parenting.

With newborn Sophie proving to be quite a handful, Roe’s mother pays for a partially trained nurse, Virginia Mitchell, to come help the new parents for a few weeks. Virginia proves to be especially helpful when Robin has to leave town for work and Roe is struck with a bad case of the flu.

One particularly stormy night, Roe wakes to hear her daughter crying and Virginia nowhere to be found. Roe's brother Philip helps her search the house and they happen upon a body outside… but it isn’t Virginia’s. Now, not only does she have a newborn to care for and a vulnerable new marriage to nurture, Roe also has to contend with a new puzzle -- who is this mystery woman dead in their backyard, and what happened to Virginia? This heart-pounding and exciting next installment of the Aurora Teagarden series will leave fans happy and hungry for more.

Faithless in Death is the 52nd and most recent (2021) in the Eve Dallas series by J. D. Robb - at least until the next one comes out next month. Faithless has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK, in that odd way that brand-new titles seem to do in the UK not too long after they come out. But this first drop is pretty much always for a really short time, so grab this fast if you want it.

Spoiler:
Quote:
It's a beautiful Spring day in NYC when Lt. Eve Dallas gets an early morning murder call. A talented young sculptor hasn't had such a perfect day in May. Killed by her own hammer, at first it looks like an argument with a jealous partner but it soon becomes clear that there is much more to this case than a lovers' quarrel turned fatal.

Eve finds herself drawn into the dark and dangerous world of a secret order. A world in which white supremacy, misogyny and religious fanaticism are everyday activities. Eve has dealt with some tough cases before but is it too much even for her to take on a wealthy, influential organisation with friends in very high places.....?

I’ve read and really enjoyed all of the books in Emma Jameson’s Lord and Lady Hetheridge series. So I was happy to receive an advance review copy a while back of the first title in Jameson’s new series featuring Jemima (Jem) Jago and set in the Isles of Scilly, off the coast of Cornwall. I found A Death at Seascape House to be a little slow to start, but I enjoyed it once it got going. (If you're really interested, you can see my review at my blog - the link is below in my signature, and just search in the search box for Jameson)

In any case, A Death at Seascape House has dropped to $0.99/£0.99 at Kindle US and UK respectively. I don't see it at all at Kobo US.
