Thanks davidfor for your kindness ... I wrote the image file on a new sd, but the problem remained. After starting and connecting to WiFi, the update stops with this message: "Something went wrong" please try again. If you got to that point, the image worked. It suggests something is wrong doing the download. You could try the Kobo desktop, or manually installing the firmware version that you want to use.

@davidfor - Many thanks indeed for the disk image. I've successfully copied it across to the SD card using the dd utility on a Linux machine. However, the Kobo Glo HD still doesn't work! When I press and hold the on/off switch the red light turns on and remains on but the screen just shows the front cover of the last book I was reading together with 'Powered Off 88% read'. This is what it was doing before.

Any pointers on what to try next would really be appreciated. Is it most likely to be a problem with the SD card (I copied the image onto the original 4GB one), the battery, the screen, the main PCB, something else? I'd like to identify the root cause of the problem and fix it if possible.

Firstly, I checked the MD5sum for the file and it matches what you sent.

What is on the screen is just an indication of what was last written to it. Eink screens do not need power to maintain the image. Once something is drawn there, it will stay there until something else is drawn.

My usually suggestions at this point are:
  • Check all the cables and the SD card is seated correctly.
  • Try a manual factory reset.
  • Try a new SD card. A larger one can be used and the space recovered later.
  • Charge the device for at least an hour before. Don't assume the battery is charged just because it was when you last used it.
  • Leave the device on charge overnight.
  • Examine the screen to make sure the backplane hasn't been damaged. If you can see the back, it is can be more obvious.
  • Try with the power plugged in. If the battery is dead, it should start.

Kobo Glo HD sd card image?

HI, I would like to get the original Glo HD sd card image if possible. My Glo HD is responding so slowly that it's almost un-responsive - I've tried factory resetting but the behaviour is unchanged so I'd like to try replacing the SD card. Thanks!

Whether this will help will depend on what is really wrong. It will only do something if the SD card is failing. Less drastic things to do are a logout of the Kobo account which will rebuild the database. Or a factory reset to clean everything up. Or, if the card is still working, make your own image to put on the new card. This will retain your serial number, but, I would do a factory reset as well to make sure everything is clean.

My Kobo Glo HD is bricked. I only see a completely white screen after an update. Restore to factory settings does not work. Please, can someone send me a image to put on my SD card (4GB the original one)?

Help!
Yesterday Davidfor sent me an image for my Kobo Glo HD N437. (Thanks Davidfor!)
I have put the image on the SD card with various programs (BalenaEtcher, Win32diskImager) to no avail. The new image starts up and asks for language, time zone and then the type of internet connection.... And then the installation process stops.
Wifi briefly searches for an update and returns an error "Something went wrong... Please try again."
Even with USB cable, the update will not complete. Then the KOBO program also hangs.
Also going back to factory settings does not solve the problem.

Did you use a new SD card? The first could be WiFi issues, but, the second make me think the update cannot be written to the card, which suggests a failing card. You could try copying the update to the device manually and seeing if that works.

HELP Again.

Question: Who has a recent image for the Kobo Glo HD (N437) for me. Or another solution. Because ==>>

Until version 4.14.12777 the e-reader worked perfectly. The problem started because I wanted to manually update to version 4.26.16704.

With a lot of effort I got the default image (3.14.0) working. Updates still not processing properly (Wifi, Kobo app and manual)
The Kobo app and manual lead to a crash.
When I try via WiFi I get an error message "Network Error ....."
But if I use the internal Kobo web browser, I can surf the internet without any problems. I have tried different SD cards with the same result every time!

So now I'm at version 3.14.0 on my Kobo Glo HD and can't get a recent version installed.

To get there I had to edit the file: .kobo/KoboReader.sqlite with the following line:
INSERT INTO user(UserID,UserKey) VALUES('1','');
I used the Dbeaver program for this, which can handle many types of databases.
