Three years later, Trouble in Triplicate is £1.49 again at Kindle UK, but only $1.99, not $2.99, at Kindle and Kobo US. So if you didn't grab it last time, here's another chance...

The links below are still good.

Another freebie from Joffe books, free at Kindle US and UK. Unlike many of their previous ones, I'm not familiar with this author, but WTH, it's free...and if you don't like it, you can delete it...

The Lost Children, second in the Detective Ray Paterson series by Steve Parker

Discover a crime thriller full of shocking twists by one of the most exciting new authors you’ll read this year.

A MAN SHOT DEAD IN THE STREET. BUT WHAT THE POLICE FIND NEARBY IS FAR WORSE.

An elderly African man is found dead in the street, shot through the head. The killing has the hallmarks of a professional assassin. Dumped in a waste bin next to the dead man is the dismembered torso of a child.

On his first day back at work, disgraced Detective Superintendent Ray Paterson finds himself teamed up again with newly promoted Detective Inspector Johnny Clocks.

They must hunt down a ruthless killer with connections that go far beyond anything they’ve ever encountered before.

Within days they know who committed the murders and why, but are left reeling when they are ordered by the government to release the child’s killers.

FINDING THE KILLERS WASN’T THE HARD PART. BRINGING THEM TO JUSTICE IS.

This is the second in a series of action-packed, edge-of-your-seat crime thrillers, with an ending that will have your heart in your mouth.

An omnibus of four early titles in the Inspector Maigret series by Georges Simenon is on sale at both Kindle and Kobo US for $2.99. This is a nice price even if you only need a couple of the titles, because most Maigret titles (with the exception, possibly of the first one, Pietr the Latvian), don't go on sale all that often in the US. There are also supposedly some extras, like first edition covers, in the omnibus.

The Maigret books are among the worst for having multiple titles, which often don't seem to have much in common, so here's a list of the books in the omnibus, with alternate (English) titles based on the ones provided by SYKM.
  • Pietr the Latvian, apa The Strange Case of Peter the Lett, apa The Case of Peter the Lett, apa Maigret and the Enigmatic Lett
  • The Hanged Man of Saint-Pholien, apa The Crime of Inspector Maigret, apa Maigret and the Hundred Gibbets
  • The Carter of 'La Providence', apa The Crime at Lock 14, apa Maigret Meets a Milord, apa Lock 14
  • The Grand Banks Café, apa The Sailor’s Rendezvous, apa Maigret Answers a Plea

It's nice to see Random House putting Nero Wolfe/Archie Goodwin titles (by Rex Stout, if I needed to say it) on sale both the in US and the UK at the same time, which they have been doing recently. Right now The Second Confession is $1.99/£1.49 in the US/UK respectively.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003M5IUTS
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-second-confession
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003M5IUTS

Quote:
When a millionaire businessman hires Nero Wolfe to probe the background of his daughter’s boyfriend, it seems like just another case of an overprotective father. But when a powerful gangland boss “counsels” the detective to drop the matter, Wolfe receives a warning: a burst of machine-gun fire through the windows of his orchid room. Then the lawyer boyfriend turns up dead, leaving Archie the number one suspect. Throw in drugged drinks, two man-killing debutantes, and officials of a highly un-American party and Wolfe finds himself involved in a case where he must quickly solve one murder to prevent another: his own.

The Chalk Pit is the ninth in the Ruth Galloway series by Elly Griffiths. It has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK as part of today’s Daily Deal. Sadly, it’s not on sale in the US.

Quote:
Far below Norwich is a maze of old mining tunnels. When Ruth Galloway is called to examine a set of human remains in one of them, she notices the bones are almost translucent, a sign they were boiled soon after death. Once more, she’s at the helm of a murder investigation.

Meanwhile, DCI Nelson is looking for a homeless woman who he hears has gone “underground.” Could she have disappeared into the labyrinth? And if so, is she connected to the body Ruth found? As Ruth and Nelson investigate the tunnels, they hear rumors of secret societies, cannibalism, and ritual killings. And when a dead body is found with a map of what seems to be the full maze, they realize their hunt for the killer has only just begun—and that more bodies may be underfoot.

Aristotle Detective is the first in Margaret Doody's series set in ancient Athens, and featuring (big surprise!) Aristotle as the detective, along with his young former student, Stephanos. I read and enjoyed the first three books in this series shortly before a trip to Athens, and the background I had soaked up from reading them definitely enhanced my enjoyment of my visit there. And the mysteries were fun too! Sadly, however, books four and five, from a different publisher, don't seem to be available in e-book. And it actually appears there are even more titles in Italian, not yet translated into English. Maybe someday…

In any case, Aristotle Detective is now on sale in the UK for £1.99, which is kind of unusual. The first three books go on sale in the US pretty often, but I haven't noticed them on sale in the UK much, if at all.

Quote:
In ancient Athens, the great philosopher applies logic to a lethal crime—in the “eminently enjoyable” first novel in a historical mystery series (Colin Dexter, author of the Inspector Morse Mysteries).

Young Stephanos is desperate to save his family’s honor by proving in the Athenian court that his exiled cousin is not guilty of shooting an arrow into a prominent patrician. For help, he turns to his old teacher—the cunning and clever thinker known as Aristotle.

It will all lead up to a tense public trial in which Stephanos must draw on the rhetorical skills he’s learned from his eccentric, brilliant mentor, in this novel filled with suspense, humor, and historical detail—the first in a series of “witty, elegant whodunits” (Times Literary Supplement).

“[An] unusually authentic Ancient-Greece murder tale.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Doody brings the Athens of 322 BC to life with skill and verve…wonderfully plotted.”—Publishers Weekly

After rarely putting titles in Rhys Bowen's Molly Murphy series on sale, Macmillan now seems to be doing just that with some of the early titles. Last week we had In Dublin's Fair City and Oh Danny Boy both briefly on sale (no longer) and now here's In Like Flynn available for $2.99 at both Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Like-Flynn-Mu...dp/B003J4VE1I/
Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/Like-Flynn-...dp/B003J4VE1I/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/in-like-flynn-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
Fledgling private investigator Molly Murphy's latest assignment gives her the opportunity to escape the typhoid epidemic sweeping across New York City in the summer of 1902 for the lush Hudson River Valley. And it comes from an unlikely source-Captain Daniel Sullivan, a New York City police detective and erstwhile beau of Molly's. She has vowed to keep him at arm's length until he can rid himself of his socialite fiancée, but she can't pass up the chance to take advantage of his offer of a real detective job.

Daniel hires Molly to go undercover inside the country household of Senator Barney Flynn, in Peekskill, New York. Flynn's wife, Theresa, has become the latest devotee of a pair of spiritualists known as the Sorensen Sisters. The frail Theresa is desperate to use the sisters' alleged abilities to hold a séance to contact her infant son, who was kidnapped five years ago and never found; the accused kidnapper was killed before he could tell police where the boy was being held. But the police are sure the women are frauds.

When Molly allows herself to be distracted from the Sorensen Sisters and the members of the Flynn household by the unsolved kidnapping, it is a race against time to find out what's really going on before it's too late.

In Like Flynn is the latest captivating installment in a series which has garnered an impressive array of awards and nominations in just three books: Rhys Bowen's Molly Murphy mysteries have won the Agatha Award, the Anthony Award, the Bruce Alexander Historical Award, and the Herodotus Award, and have been shortlisted for the Agatha Award, the Macavity Award, and the Mary Higgins Clark Award.

Murder in the Place of Anubis is the first in Lynda S Robinson's Lord Meren series. Per SYKM, it was a finalist for the 1995 Macavity Award for Best First Novel. I really liked this series in DTB, and now apparently Open Road/Mysterious Press have gotten the e-rights and are cycling through putting them on sale. Woo-hoo for me!

Oh yeah, Anubis is $1.99 right now at Kindle and Kobo US, and discountable at Kobo.

“This exceptional debut melds ancient Egyptian religious belief and practice with court intrigue to produce a riveting mystery.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review

The body of a much-hated scribe has been found in the sacred place of embalming, and the resulting outrage could threaten the reign of Tutankhamun. So the boy king tasks his investigator, Lord Meren, to look into the crime. The quest will take Meren into the worlds of nobles, slaves, and schemers in the royal court—all while he fights to keep the teenaged pharaoh safe from those who would take advantage of this crisis . . .

Lady Georgiana Rannoch is off to solve a Hollywood homicide in the eighth mystery in the New York Times bestselling Royal Spyness series.

England, 1934. Georgie's mother, the glamorous and much-married actress, is hearing wedding bells once again—which is why she must hop across the pond for a quickie divorce in Reno. To offer her moral support, Georgie agrees to go along on the all expenses paid voyage across the Atlantic.

While her mother meets movie mogul Cy Goldman—who insists on casting her in his next picture—Georgie finds herself caught up in the secret investigation of a suspected jewel thief. Lucky for her, the lead investigator happens to be her dashing beau, Darcy!

Her mother's movie and Darcy’s larceny lead everyone to Cy’s Hollywood home, where the likes of Charlie Chaplin are hanging about and there’s enough romantic intrigue to fill a double feature. But they hardly get a chance to work out the sleeping arrangements before Cy turns up dead. As if there wasn’t enough drama already...

I had never heard of Henry Kuttner's short four-book Michael Gray mystery series before an omnibus of all four titles popped up as a recommendation for me from one of the major e-book retailers - I can't remember which one now. Usually these recommendations are bosh, but the omnibus with four titles is on sale for $1.99, so at $0.50 per title, I figured it was worth a look.

Imagine my surprise to find out, courtesy of Fantastic Fiction, that Kuttner and his wife, CL Moore, were well-known and influential science fiction and fantasy authors in the 1940s. Again per FF, in the early 1950s, he and his wife then both largely turned away from writing, enrolled at that evil school across town (USC), and earned psychology degrees. (It's interesting that Kuttner's mystery protagonist, Michael Gray, is a "psychoanalyst turned sleuth".) And then Kuttner died rather young. Wow!

Fantastic Fiction also says that it's not clear whether he actually wrote all of the Michael Gray titles - that he may have farmed out the later ones to other authors when he "found himself incapable of finishing them". In any case, with that rather wild background, I figured that at $1.99 (actually $1.79, since it's discountable at Kobo), the omnibus was worth the risk, and I snagged it for my TBR pile. Titles in the omnibus include: The Murder of Eleanor Pope, The Murder of Ann Avery (apa Masked for Murder), Murder of a Mistress, and Murder of a Wife.

Spoiler:
Quote:
From “a neglected master”: All four murder mysteries featuring the psychoanalyst turned sleuth in 1950s San Francisco (Ray Bradbury, author of Fahrenheit 451).

Dr. Michael Gray is constantly drawn into the lives, and murders, of his clientele. Fortunately, this unconventional detective’s eye for human behavior just might keep him out of mortal danger . . .

The Murder of Eleanor Pope: When a woman is killed in a foggy San Francisco park, the police suspect it was a robbery gone terribly wrong, but Dr. Gray’s troubled new patient may be the key to the truth.

The Murder of Ann Avery: Everyone thinks a juvenile delinquent murdered Ann Avery, but Dr. Gray has a whole list of potential suspects—if someone doesn’t kill them first.

Murder of a Mistress: When a call girl is murdered, four people confess to the deed. But the evidence points to one of Dr. Gray’s patients. Heiress Eileen Herrick may be a wild child, but Gray is out to prove she’s no killer.

Murder of a Wife: Dr. Gray’s new patient is housewife Karen Champion. He was warned she’s a pathological liar, but he finds it difficult to ignore her claim that her husband is trying to kill her . . .

“Kuttner is magic.” —Joe R. Lansdale, author of The Thicket

If you've wanted to try Steve Hockensmith's Holmes on the Range series, or his new (possibly self-pubbed) Tarot Mysteries series, here's your chance. Per his blog post, from July 23 - 27, the first book in each series is free, and a box set of the first five titles in the Holmes on the Range series is also on sale at $6.99, instead of $9.99. Info mostly in these previous posts:

Holmes on the Range, #1 in the Holmes on the Range series, free at Kindle US and UK: info and links in this previous post.

The White Magic Five and Dime, Tarot Mysteries #1, free at Kindle US and UK: info and links in this previous post

The Holmes on the Range Mysteries Box Set: Books 1-5, $6.99 at Kindle US, sadly not on sale at Kindle UK, but not too badly priced at £7.73: info and US link in this previous post, for Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Holmes-Rang...dp/B085159CD9/

Transient Desires is the latest (2021) in the Guido Brunetti series by Donna Leon. I love this series in general, and had a chance to read an advance review copy of this title back in March and loved it too. (One note: Leon does have some pretty harsh endings from time-to-time, and this one, although not inappropriate, is one of her harsher ones.)

Desires has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK in that odd but wonderful way that the UK has of getting new titles on sale (albeit usually very briefly, usually only one day) for £0.99 long before they go on sale in the US. This is one book that I bought before doing the post, because I didn't want to miss it!

Quote:
'The climax is nothing less than a trip - across the laguna - into the heart of darkness ... Leon's special skill is to splice glimpses of la dolce vita with acute analysis of moral and ethical dilemmas ... The series that has shadowed Brunetti for three decades is an epic achievement.' The Times

In his many years as a Commissario, Guido Brunetti has seen all manner of crime and known intuitively how to navigate the various pathways in his native Venice to discover the person responsible. Now, in the thirtieth novel in Donna Leon's masterful series, he faces a heinous crime committed outside his jurisdiction. He is drawn in innocently enough: two young American women have been badly injured in a boating accident, joy riding in the Laguna with two young Italians. However, Brunetti's curiosity is aroused by the behaviour of the young men, who abandoned the victims after taking them to the hospital. If the injuries were the result of an accident, why did they want to avoid association with it?

As Brunetti and his colleague, Claudia Griffoni, investigate the incident, they discover that one of the young men works for a man rumoured to be involved in more sinister night-time activities in the Laguna. To get to the bottom of what proves to be a gut-wrenching case, Brunetti needs to enlist the help of both the Carabinieri and the Guardia Costiera. Determining how much trust he and Griffoni can put in these unfamiliar colleagues adds to the difficulty of solving a peculiarly horrible crime whose perpetrators are technologically brilliant and ruthlessly organised.

Donna Leon's thirtieth Brunetti novel is as powerful as any she has written, testing Brunetti to his limits, forcing him to listen very carefully for the truth.

I won't be posting as much for the next few weeks. My Mom (age: 87) cracked her heel stepping off the last rung of a stepstool, so now I'm caregiver for 2 people. I have my sister's help for a few days though. On the positive side, Mom said she can now cross ambulance ride off her bucket list.
