If you are lucky enough to live in/visit Canada, or another country with shorter copyright periods (although Canada's may be going away with the sad renegotiation of NAFTA), then The Maltese Falcon and many (all?) other Dashiell Hammett titles are in the public domain, and you can get them for free from Faded Page, Gutenberg Canada, or other similar websites. If not, then you may be happy to see a legit (Vintage Crime/Black Lizard) version of The Maltese Falcon on sale in the US for only $1.99, which is the least it has been, according to eReaderIQ, in at least a decade. Hammett's titles are usually pretty expensive in the US, so I'd grab it now if you even think you might want it !

Spoiler:
Quote:
A coolly glittering gem of detective fiction that has haunted three generations of readers, from one of the greatest mystery writers of all time.

A treasure worth killing for. Sam Spade, a slightly shopworn private eye with his own solitary code of ethics. A perfumed grafter named Joel Cairo, a fat man named Gutman, and Brigid O’Shaughnessy, a beautiful and treacherous woman whose loyalties shift at the drop of a dime. These are the ingredients of Dashiell Hammett's iconic, influential, and beloved The Maltese Falcon.

Yes, really rare for his books to go on sale in the US, and they are just outrageeously priced when not. I was lucky and had a work trip to Canada not long before the Covid meltdown. I was very organized with my downloading while there !

The Habit of Murder is the 23rd and next-to-most-recent in the Matthew Bartholomew series by Susanna Gregory. It has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. I enjoyed the first few books in this series many years ago in DTB, and since then have liked the few that have gone on sale from time to time.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N6DCRQ1/
Kindle US/Smile: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01N6DCRQ1/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-habit-of-murder

Spoiler:
Quote:
The twenty third chronicle of Matthew Bartholomew.

In 1360 a deputation from Cambridge ventures to the Suffolk town of Clare in the hope that the wealthy Elizabeth de Burgh has left a legacy to Michaelhouse. Yet when they arrive they discover that the report of her death is false and that the college seems destined for bankruptcy.

Determined to see if some of its well-heeled citizens can be persuaded to sponsor Michaelhouse, Matthew Bartholomew, Brother Michael and Master Langelee become enmeshed in the town's politics. They quickly discover that a great many other people in Clare have recently met untimely deaths. These killings, combined with the arrogance Lady de Burgh has shown over the refurbishment of the church and the grotesque behaviour of some of her entourage, have created a dangerous restlessness in the town: an atmosphere intensified when yet more murders occur.

One of the victims is a fellow traveller of the Michaelhouse contingent, and Matthew Bartholomew and Brother Michael feel honour-bound to identify his killer. It is a hunt which takes them deep into Clare's murky foundations and which threatens their own survival as well as that of their beloved college.

And, as @murraypaul mentioned in an earlier post, the first two books in the series seem to be permanently at $0.99 and $1.99, so you can try the series on the cheap if you want to. Info here.

And finally, when I was looking at the series page, I noticed that the eleventh book, The Mark Of A Murderer, is still $1.66, which it has been for quite a while. Info in @Tarana's previous post.

And here are Kobo links for the last three:

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman is $2.99 on Amazon.com
First in a series.
Quote:
In a peaceful retirement village, four unlikely friends meet weekly in the Jigsaw Room to discuss unsolved crimes; together they call themselves the Thursday Murder Club.

When a local developer is found dead with a mysterious photograph left next to the body, the Thursday Murder Club suddenly find themselves in the middle of their first live case.

As the bodies begin to pile up, can our unorthodox but brilliant gang catch the killer, before it's too late?

Spoiler:
Big Red and Old Red Amlingmeyer have starred in five "Holmes on the Range" novels, rustling up award nominations and fans aplenty as they cracked mysteries using the methods of their hero, Sherlock Holmes. How did these Old West drifters first discover Holmes, though? What were they doing before their novel adventures began? And how did their early, awkward stabs at "deducifying" turn out? These seven short stories provide the answers.

In "Dear Mr. Holmes," Old Red first gets the itch to turn detective -- and just in time, too, because a killer's stalking him and his brother along a Kansas cattle trail. In "Gustav Amlingmeyer, Holmes of the Range," Old Red's attempt to settle down and open his own "cafay" goes haywire when one of the customers gets a side order of arsenic with his steak and potatoes. In "Wolves in Winter," Big Red and Old Red go up against deadly predators of both the two- and four-legged variety. And the adventure continues in four more stories (most of them originally published in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine).

She was one of the most sought after women in the world. A top model who would stop at nothing to get what she wanted—even another woman’s man. And now she was dead, the victim of a brutal murder. Police Lieutenant Eve Dallas put her life on the line to take the case when suspicion fell on her best friend, the other woman in the fatal love triangle. Beneath the façade of glamour, Eve found that the world of high fashion thrived on an all-consuming obsession for youth and fame. One that led from the runway to the dark underworld of New York City where drugs could be found to fulfill any desire—for a price…
