I still have an immersion coil in my office desk, though I haven't used it in years. (Microwave being just as easy)

Amazon still lists the cup-sized immersion coils:

The renovations of the Dom Tower, about 100 meters from our house, has been ongoing for a couple of years now. So far you did hear them working, but it was never really loud. Until last week.
It sounds like they're currently working with a (small?) jackhammer most of the day. During most of the day the sound is partially drowned out by the regular noises of cars, people, boats, etc. But they start just after 7am. My weekend is on Sunday and Monday, where I usually stay in bed longer than on days the store is open. And at the moment I sometimes switch from morning to afternoon on days I work half a day if my mother has a hospital appointment. But sleeping in on weekdays is, for now, a thing of the past. It could be worse; there are people living right next to the tower. |

My mother-in-law has been placed on Hospice Care, and will be moving from the nursing home she's been in since March 2020 to my sister-in-laws home for her remaining days.
She had a CT scan in February to check a small hernia, because she was having pain they couldn't account for. This revealed a mass on her pancreas. Due to her age, 91, they didn't do a biopsy, but they did run blood work to check all vital levels. A couple of weeks ago, she had a bout of serious pain and stomach upset, so they took her to the ER. More blood work was done, and several doctors consulted, with the diagnosis of advanced pancreatic cancer with liver involvement. Blood work points to this. It's all being set up so the moment, stuff moved around, the room made ready, with the hope of moving her on Saturday, if all the red tape is finished. The doctors are saying she maybe has a couple of months at most. Hospice will adjust their care as it progresses, all the way to 24/7 when it becomes necessary. So, a bit of a shock for everyone, because she really is in decent health aside from her knees making it tough to get around. At 91, it doesn't take much to snowball. We had just arranged for our #2 son to come visit with his family. They live 330 miles away, and we haven't seen them face to face since Thanksgiving of 2019. They are driving up today, as I type this. Very excited to see 7 year old granddaughter and 5 year old grandson. Our oldest son in South Korea hasn't been able to figure out a way to come home just yet. He's trying. Our daughter and her spouse, and our youngest son and his wife and 3 boys live nearby. |

My mom will be 91 in November, and still lives on her own in an apartment and she still drives, although not as much. The apartment is connected to the shopping area that has a grocery store, her hair stylist, and the bank. She does drive to church and other places, only in good weather in daylight.
You'd never know she was almost 91. She does her own cooking and cleaning, and doesn't like to be told what to do. |

Altho, when my late FIL was still with us (96 upon leaving the globe), and he drove, I was like "it's every man for himself!" and I would make sure I wasn't anywhere near a road, or anything else where a vehicle could "get" me. I'm just not that brave. Thank GOD he lived in a place where homes are miles apart, everybody stops on the "main drag" for 20-30 minutes, holding up traffic, to shoot the proverbial, the speed limit is like, 10mph, etc. Hitch |

My mom passed away in 2018 at 89. She only stopped driving about two years before. We had been concerned for a while, but she managed, and always said "I will turn in my keys as soon as I feel I'm unable to drive." One day she was pulling out of a parking space and went forward instead of back, and bumped the cement guard post. She came home and turned in her keys.

Sorry to hear about your mother-in-law, Deskisamess.
My Dad passed away in February at 96. He was able to stay in his own home with support from the family and hospice care for the last couple of weeks. He was sharp as a tack until the last two weeks or so. It's very difficult, but it helps to have family there. My best to you all. |
