The first phone number I remember was "629", but that was when my family lived in "married quarters" on a RAAF base (Point Cook), and basically every phone number was an extension. Cheers, Marc |

My grandma's phone hung on a box on the wall, like Sam Drucker's in Petticoat Junction. You cranked the winder on the side to get the operator, who knew everyone on her board, and would connect you. It was also a party line; her ring was 2 longs and a short. Further down the line, her neighbour's ring might be 2 short. When someone forgot to hang up properly the line would be stalled; they would get the bells and whistles out to make loud noises into the speaker cone so that their neigbour down the line might hear it and hang up properly. Our first phone number was RIverside 2-3558. My mom still had the current variation until a few months ago when she chose to go into a retirement home. When she found out she couldn't keep her phone number of 60 years, she almost didn't check in. Our phone numbers here are 10 digits for local calls; it' a good thing they have phones where you can program in these numbers. I can barely remember my own. What this has to do with the internet running out of space I don't know. WDE. |

256-1478. I remember that because of the two L shapes it forms on the keypad.

But on further inspection, maybe it's not a goal post, maybe they're jail bars. Well, all I can say is either "let the games begin," or "break me outta here - I've been falsely imprisoned." Is being "held captive" the same as being "captivated?" | |

				We have to fix this.

Don't panic, but does everyone realize that this would mean no more porn sites? I don't know if I could live with that.

My first phone number now belongs to a rather large law firm in Boulder. I still remember my home phone number in Germany even! I have several of my Dad's books that he had in college, and they say "Mariposa 4872".

Still but following the phone line: Our current land line phone number is just one digit off from a local WalMart store, which of course is open 24/7/365. You'd be surprised (or maybe not) how many people are dyslexic with the keypad on a telephone and get me instead. What really chaps my hide is that these Wal-ians, Wal-sters, Wal-ites, Wal-ers and Wal-ettes always get mad at ME for not being who they thought they were calling. Sometimes they argue, because how dare I answer WalMart's phone and pretend not to be them, and sometimes they just slam down the receiver as if I was inconveniencing them. The part I enjoy is when one of their employees misdials, gets my answering machine, and still leaves a message reporting that they won't be in to work that day. Oh well. |
