I see no interest in buying this e-reader model.
It is far from having as much function as a competing device.
Very basic for a high price

The "PocketBook InkPad X" is also more interesting with Bluetooth and support for audiobooks + TTS, file explorer.
Inkpad X doesn't have stylus support...that's a huge loss in my books. The price is competitive compared to other stylus equipped eInk note taking devices like the Remarkable 2 or Boox Note Air. Only the Boyue P10 is cheaper but the screen is a little worse.

If I'm going to listen to audio books it makes way more sense to use my phone IMO.

BOOKEEN NOTEA 399$ It also has integrated speakers & pen (wacom).
Compatible with Audible, or with KOBO and KINDLE applications.
https://bookeen.com/products/precomm...ue-et-connecte

Otherwise, you can also write on Pockebook X with a pen. (but not with such precision)

PS: For me, it's just a plus if I can use the reader for audiobooks or TTS without the need to use a phone.
I think it depends on the priorities of every users, I would not look for logic in that

The PocketBook InkPad X has some extremely serious problems regarding speed, according to a number of reviews.

This is the one I would buy - since I want ONLY an ereader of this size - if they would only support the damn thing on a more regular basis.

I'm a little leary of the stylus because I've had battery ones in the past that didn't work so well. But my current Dell laptop has one that I really like. In fact, looking at the close up picture of Kobo's stylus, it looks exactly the same except with a Dell logo instead of Kobo. Of course, that doesn't mean it is the same, but at least I know this type of stylus can work really well.

I like that the cover opens up and folds over the top instead of like a book. And that it has the pen holder. I could also see taking the cover off while leaving the back on to possibly make it less slippery to hold when just reading.

I've always liked the Kobo software. So the ereading side of things would be good and familiar.

The Onyx Boox Note Air is the only other option that I can see really compares. It definitely has some better features, but I think I'd be happy with the Elipsa. I don't know if the Note Air would be worth $80 more -- and I'd still need a cover.

Does that making-of video confirm a plastic substrate on the screen? I can't see it surviving those falls otherwise, with how heavy it is.

i'd say yes. if so it certainly makes the case for having a plastic substrate rather than glass to minimise breakages,

New Kobo (N604) [Elipsa - ed.]

I went to buy one last night and they were sold out. They just sold out this weekend, too. 🙁

However, that’s great news for Kobo. (And us, since they stay in business &#128538

I find the heated disdain for the Elipsa fascinating. It’s clearly designed to be a note taker more than an eReader. It’s targeted to a completely different market. The re:Markable proved that there is a market for low power, editing & note taking devices. I’ve seen quite a few of them at writers conferences. I hear they have an only so-so ebook reading experience, but that’s not why people bought them. It was cool having edits done right next to me on my book, then sent to me as a pdf.

For $8 I can buy GoodNotes for my iPad and do the same thing as reMarkable, and I have. My iPad cost $400, too. But it also has distractions, weight, and an unquenchable need for electricity daily. I was looking forward to Elipsa with its EPUB editing support, low power needs, eReader excellence, and manga utopia.

Does anybody know if the price will change after the initial pre-order?

I don't know where you are located but the Elipsa remains available for pre-order on Kobo's website (both Canada and the U.S.).

Pas facilement obtenable au Canada.

There's several other offerings but on North America, unless you willing to order them from Europe, there's not a lot of options this side of the ocean.

I’m in the US. It was definitely listed as “Sold Out” when I posted, but when I checked again two hours ago, it was available for pre-order again, so I snapped one up!

I was poking around Kobo's site, comparing specs between my Clara and the Elipsa. I noticed some obvious upgrades, like USB-C support as well as 802.11 ac, meaning the Elipsa can connect to my 5GHz network, unlike my Clara. Others have pointed out the lack of a ComfortLight PRO, which means I won't be using my Elipsa late at night unless I'm wearing blue light blocking glasses. The CPU is beefier, though. The Clara clocks in at 1GHz and the Elipsa has Quad Core @ 1.8 GHz. I suspect that stylus will need a faster CPU to keep up with the strokes, but this will mean that the keyboard should technically feature faster typing as well. No more lagging as I type notes? I'm definitely looking forward to that. The eInk screen is the Carta 1200, but the DPI takes a hit. I'll see how that works out when I get it.

The internal storage is a nice 32GB, but I didn't notice a spec for onboard RAM. The Clara has 512mb. Has anybody heard from early reviewers what the onboard RAM is for the Elipsa?

Lastly, the re:Markable likes to promote its product as a "visualization power tool". There are some beautifully rendered illustrations out there done on the re:M. Has anything been said of the Elipsa's drawing capabilities? It's thought to have the same screen as the re:M, but I haven't seen anything on its drawing tools. Looking on the Elipsa site I see under the "Create Notebooks…" section that "Kobo Elipsa’s built-in notebook feature has room for all your notes, ideas, and to-do lists. Transform your handwriting to typed text with just a tap and clean up lists and shapes." I didn't realize it had handwriting recognition. That's going to be helpful. However, despite seeing variable line width in the sample drawings, I don't see much in the way of controls. Perhaps the stylus' buttons handle line width? However, the re:M mentions brushes, etc. If the Elipsa offers more robust rendering tools, Kobo hasn't seen fit to advertise them. Can anybody point me to a review that mentions or explores the artistic aspect of the Elipsa?

That's great, it's one of my favorite features of the Forma, and one that really should get mentioned more often. The amount of abuse I subjected the device to in the 2.5 years I've owned it is ridiculous, yet the screen is still just fine.

Given the amount of flexing in the video, I would say the Elipsa has to have a Mobius screen. Otherwise, it would have broken under all that flexing.

Mobius screen has the connectors on the narrow side.
There is no space for this in the housing.
There is also shatterproof glass (Asahi).
