Most TV shows, even though they're serials, are standalone. You don't need to watch the first episode of most sitcom or police procedural / detective shows to understand what's happening in any episode. Many mystery novels are likewise standalone. Including things like *ahem* Discworld. Past events, when relevant to the current story, are summarized by the narrator or characters.

In the case of Empress, the main character was very passive in that story. It wasn't ABOUT them, and that story ended. Even if I read no opinions or summaries about this one, it's a very educated guess that you don't need to know anything about it.
With TV shows, the storyline for they episode my be standalone, there can be character development that makes the episodes not really stand alone.

Standalone means not a single reference to anything from past episodes, no character development at all up to that episode, and nothing you are supposed to know from past episode(s).

I think we have different definitions of "standalone".
I use this one:
Quote:
When a work is set in the same universe, yet has very little if any narrative connection to its predecessor, and can stand on its own without a thorough understanding of the series, the work can be referred to as a standalone sequel. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Mad Max: Fury Road, Shrek Forever After, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Son of the Mask, Cars 3, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water and the upcoming films Spirit Untamed, Space Jam: A New Legacy, and The Suicide Squad are examples of standalone movie sequels.

There Is No Antimemetics Division by qntm is $0.99 (66% off) on Amazon.com

This is a collection of stories, originally published on the SCP wiki. You can read it for free if you wish.

The SCP wiki has community-written stories about a shadowy organization that contains and documents various anomalies and monsters that pose a danger to humanity / reality / spacetime / whatever.

This particular antimemetics sequence is a fan favorite.

So sadly a) Callahan's Crosstime Saloon is not on sale in Canada (price is $7) and b) The Callahan novels are apparently Kindle exclusives. I hate that.

Wilder Girls by Rory Power is $1.99 on Amazon.com
Can also be categorized as Horror. The Book Smugglers describe it as "A queer, feminist, body horror story with healthy side of mystery and romance and with a weirdness that is hard to put to words".
Quote:
From the author of Burn Our Bodies Down, a feminist Lord of the Flies about three best friends living in quarantine at their island boarding school, and the lengths they go to uncover the truth of their confinement when one disappears. This fresh debut is a mind-bending novel unlike anything you've read before.

It's been eighteen months since the Raxter School for Girls was put under quarantine. Since the Tox hit and pulled Hetty's life out from under her.

It started slow. First the teachers died one by one. Then it began to infect the students, turning their bodies strange and foreign. Now, cut off from the rest of the world and left to fend for themselves on their island home, the girls don't dare wander outside the school's fence, where the Tox has made the woods wild and dangerous. They wait for the cure they were promised as the Tox seeps into everything.

But when Byatt goes missing, Hetty will do anything to find her, even if it means breaking quarantine and braving the horrors that lie beyond the fence. And when she does, Hetty learns that there's more to their story, to their life at Raxter, than she could have ever thought true.
Jeff VanderMeer has been enthusiastic about it, and the author cites Annihilation as one of the inspirations.

Again $0.99 at Kindle US. I really enjoyed this when I read it. Link in @salty-horse's OP is still good.

I first read A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking through Kobo Plus. I liked it enough that I bought a copy (on sale, true, but I still bought it after reading it.)
