Most TV shows, even though they're serials, are standalone. You don't need to watch the first episode of most sitcom or police procedural / detective shows to understand what's happening in any episode. Many mystery novels are likewise standalone. With TV shows, the storyline for they episode my be standalone, there can be character development that makes the episodes not really stand alone.

Standalone means not a single reference to anything from past episodes, no character development at all up to that episode, and nothing you are supposed to know from past episode(s).

I think we have different definitions of "standalone".
I use this one:
