I was using 1.23.1 or 1.26.1 (1.23 I think), I've reverted to 1.17.1. I'll see how stable that is.
The installers I have are for 44182 (1.17.1), 50131 (1.23.1) and 55093 (1.26.1). MacBook Pro, 13" 2017, running High Sierra 10.13.6. I was running Mojave for a while then went to Catalina, but that was such a disaster on the MacBook I reverted to High Sierra. We've also got a 27" iMac (last autumn) which has Catalina, but because we're using the room it's in as an office, it and the old iMac (stuck on Mountain Lion) aren't being used much. If K4Mac using chmod -x is getting forced updates, I have to wonder if the crash on close is causing K4Mac to rebuild some of the contents in the Kindle folder, which might include deleting any modified "updates" file or folder, thus allowing the forced updates ![]() Just wild speculation on my part ... |

Alternatively, it could be that the sync process is running checks on the app and file components and rebuilding as necessary. Not to sound paranoid, but my suspicion is that this thread is being monitored... |

In that case, I have no idea why blocking auto-updates isn't working for you. While it's possible the sync process is rebuilding file components as necessary, this hasn't been an issue for me (thus far). |

Per the attached .bat file of the OP
Had to quote out the "if/then" part searching for the kindle app. Worked fine afterwards |

I am pretty sure that is what happened to me. I downloaded the 1.17 version THANK YOU! and was able to translate my book files ONE time. The next time I tried, it popped up a sign-in window, and never accepted my credentials. I uninstalled, reinstalled, reinstalled newest version, uninstalled, all variations on a theme. I have not been able to get it to work again.
When I uninstalled kindle (using Revo Uninstaller) it still came up under "windows" menu key - and ran. So I uninstalled it through windows 10 and it's still there (and running) in my app folders!!! It's as if it was posessed! So, any suggestions? or are we just screwed from here on out? I have 5 diff kindles, and would like to be able to painlessly move the books around ... Thanks for any help or info!!! and thanks for having this forum! Just found it! Liz ![]() |

Kindle for PC 1.17 is still working for me so they haven't cut it off yet.
Try to install a later version, log in, and then install 1.17 over the top of it without deregistering or uninstalling anything. Be sure to look at the info in the first post of this thread for avoiding updates. |

Rats! I came back to amaze you with my ability to fix the problem, only to discover, you already know! Yep, I let it install the most recent version, then installed the old one over top. Hopefully, I won't have to do that every time, but even so, it's not a huge problem. I didn't get notice of these posts, so sorry for the delay in THANKING YOU!!!
THANKS for the workaround. Greatly appreciate this forum! Liz |

I applied the advice in the first post to replace the updates folder with a blank txt file (no extension) and haven't had any forced updates.

No method is working

Thank you for your post. But no method is working. Even the latest version 1.31 kindle for pc is not able to download some books. We donot need to downgrade to1.17, because most of books cannot be downloaded with this version. The version 1.24 is the best one, Calibre works well with this version. |

I suspect that the books you've bought require KFX format, so this thread won't help. But if the books will download with K4PC 1.24, I think the DRM can be removed, and the books converted to another format. See Apprentice Alf's blog for details and help. |

I am struggling to stop Kindle for PC upgrading.
I installed KindleForPC-installer-1.17.44170.exe as an admin user into C:\Program Files (x86)\Amazon\Kindle by right clicking and select "run as administrator" I actually run it as a non admin user. It allows me to run it for while, register and download a azw book, but at some point it updates anyway. The updated version seems to go into my local profile instead of Program Files (x86). I definitely have "Install automatic updates..." not selected. I tried the script but I get "Cannot disable downloads - Kindle for PC is not installed at expected location Press any key to continue . . ." Also I cannot find any "updates" folder. Can anyone help? |

The second line of the .bat script says
set KINDLE=%LocalAppData%\Amazon\Kindle what I actually have is c:\Users\myname\AppData\Local\Amazon\Kindle if I go to a command prompt and type C:\>cd %LocalAppData% I go to C:\Users\myname\AppData\Local> the third line of the script is if not exist "%KINDLE%\application\Kindle.exe" goto :nokindle so that means %LocalAppData%\Amazon\Kindle\applications\Kindle.e xe which on my system is C:\Users\myname\AppData\Local\Amazon\Kindle\applic ations\Kindle.exe I don't have an applications folder in there. My Kindle.exe is at C:\Program Files (x86)\Amazon\Kindle\Kindle.exe |
