8-ish inches is the sweet spot for me. I only bought the Forma because I wanted the buttons, and I won't be getting an Elipsa, nice bit of kit though it is.

This is for genaral epub reading. If I were into PDFs and note taking it would be something else; I'd snap one up in a heartbeat.
Yeah, I'm an avid Kobo fan and for a while, I would look at my DnD bookshelf and I would like to have them on a Kobo so it's really for that purpose. And my KA1 battery is failing.

Now I'll have to find a way to sell all those books though.

This thread is fast-moving!

I didn't know 227 dpi was the best to expect at 10". I still think it would bother me though, although I am still tempted.

I change my font size a lot, depending on whether I’m reading in daylight or in the dark, with comfort light pro, or in dark mode. I go from super small with two columns in ePub mode to huge in dark mode.

Not that I would use it to take handwritten notes anyway, I don’t think.

I noticed on the E-book reader blog that amazon is offering 6 months of Kindle unlimited free with non-ad kindles. I hope they are feeling worried because of Kobo.

With stratospheric revenues reported for 2020 ($45 billion for AWS alone), I rather doubt it.

KU goes on offer very frequently.
Right now you can get three months free in the UK, without buying anything!

After being wishy-washy about it, I opted to pre-order it. I have way too many ereaders and such but eh, I kinda like rooting for the underdogs. Especially when they put out something a bit different and new.

Something I read from a review (link below) may be a deal-breaker for some:

"There are still some limitations for book annotation. First of all, it does not support fixed-page books. It only supports mobile-type Kepub(ePub extension format purchased from Kobo). It does not support fixed-page e-books."

"As for files in other formats, standard ePub format books only support line drawing, not drawing and annotation functions, and pictures are not supported at all..."

If true, this is extremely disappointing. The limitation of line drawing only on epubs is a no-go for me.

So, what would this mean for a "non-DRMed" ebook converted to Kepub? Would I be able to annotate them? I'm seriously thinking about preordering it (wasn't before) because this would make university life easy for me. The ability to load books, "write" in them, and take notes on one device is enticing.

That's... kind of completely expected, once you understand that the main raison d'être of the format (besides avoiding the Adobe DRM license) was *precisely* facilitating associating a specific chunk of visible string with a very specific piece of the DOM, and vice versa.

Wow, you mean amazon are a huge, mega-successful company? Thank you soooo much for explaining that to me.

I was assuming people on an e-reader forum would understand I was referring to the e-reader side of the business. Silly of me.

Wishful thinking that Kindle would notice a fly in their ointment such as Kobo on my part? Yes, I was hoping that amazon would notice Kobo's innovations (innovations compared to Kindles, that is, low bar) and buck up their ideas.

But clearly they will never do that, because they own the world, is that what I’m supposed to think? That’s depressing.

And it’s also a big part of why I moved to Kobo, as I am trying not to give so much money to Bezos. He has more than enough for a million lifetimes, and now he that he has stepped down, I think the only person who used to care about Kindle has left. I expect them to stagnate and count their dollars while stagnating. I like that Kobo is not stagnating.

There's no need to be sarcastic, I certainly wasn't. You have underscored my simple statement and I agree with you. Amazon doesn't much care what we think. Bigger fish....

I guess the following is a different issue?

And while the note-taking aspect makes the Elipsa a unique entry for mainstream e-readers, there’s some caveats: PDFs with DRM can’t be marked up or annotated... (Emphasis mine.)

If that's true, that would kind of ruin the Elipsa for schoolbook PDFs or programming PDF books (from somewhere like O'Reilly) wouldn't it?

https://www.theverge.com/2021/5/20/2...se-date-stylus

Maybe I don't fully understand the issue.

BTW, I note in your link that the Elipsa has a USB-C with OTG — so will it work with thumb drives and a keyboard?

I wondered the same regarding limitations with DRM'd PDFs. And regarding the USB-C -- good question. I was hoping that someone here could offer more information. There seems to be a lot of unknowns (at least to me).

I don’t think responding to sarcasm with sarcasm is unreasonable. However, maybe I was seeing sarcasm where there was none.

Does anyone know why the 10.3 inch screens 'cannot' have 300 dpi? I hope this will change in the near future. With 300 dpi and comfort light pro I don’t think I could resist. As it is, I’m still itching to pre-order.

This makes me wonder how they are doing it. It could be they are writing the annotations back into the PDF file. Which might not be possible for protected books. They also could be using two renderers. The RMSDK for protected PDFs, and something else for non-protected PDFs.

I guess that's the current limit with eink boards. It will go higher eventually but I think they'll work more on colors first and dpi second but that's my uneducated guess.
