Some of my favourites have been menitoned already -- I really recommend Butler's "Kindred" and Willis' "Doomsday Book".
Tristan Palmgren "Quietus" is about an academic time traveller on a research trip to Europe during the Black Death, and a local monk. Its focus is more towards emotions and philosophy than engineering and warfare, so it may not be what you're looking for. Last edited by hildea; 05-13-2021 at 09:30 AM. Reason: grammar and spelling |

Ring of Fire (1632) is a massive series. There are 34 books and at least 95 volumes of the Grantville Gazette. But if you do want to try this series, here is the reading order. https://ericflint.net/1632-series-reading-order/ Last edited by JSWolf; 05-13-2021 at 03:40 PM. |

It's been sitting in my Audible library and I got a couple recommendations for it over on Reddit, too, so I started in on the audiobook yesterday. My last audiobook also had some super racist tropes, so a bit of a palate cleanser was in order. I was expecting Kindred to be more of a departure from the books in this thread, and obviously it is a contrast to what are mostly white guy power fantasies, but it also has some of the same flavor, from a perspective of historical interest if not engineering and mass combat. Butler's prose runs a little passive and bookish, which is not awesome for audio, but the story is pulling me along - I made quite a dent in it yesterday.

I've read Planet of the Apes, an interesting twist from what we are used to in the movie.
The other I'd consider is the Caspak triology, The Land that Time forgot, The People that Time forgot, and Out of Time's Abyss by Edgar Rice Bouroughs. |

I guess we can divide time travel books in three broad categories: academic/research, stranded in time, and time police/time agents. Quote:

I finished the last available book in Thorensen's series, and KU recommended at least two more series in the same vein, but they look very low quality. I'm hoping he has more coming, but the last one came out two weeks ago, so it will be a while.
Kindred gets both more impressive and more emotionally taxing as I go, but it still has some of the same feel as the other castaway books, more than the other time travel subgenres. |

ERB's "Pellucidar" series, beginning with At the Earth's Core is also a lot of fun.

Personally, I will recommend... Ascendance of Bookworm, series which I love.
Has quite nice world building, likable characters and what not. As for quick summary, it is about a woman who loves books above all else, who dies under certain circumstances, and gets reincarnated as a very sickly, 5-year old girl, in medieval-esque world. She can't stand that there are no books around, available easily. (And when they were, they were insanely expensive, after all, medieval world. ) And so begins her quest for making books from scratch. Which is quite an ordeal given how prone to getting sick she is. It might not be so much 'castaway', but, given how much important books to her are, and she just wouldn't be able to even live without them, I suppose it might count? If not, I apologize from the bottom of my heart. |
