I must admit I'm not impressed so far, at 40% through. If it doesn't improve by 50% I'm abandoning it.

If you're in a bind, then please give Laura Levine's cozy book series a chance. Books 1-9 are great.

It's OK. I'm far enough through now (76%) that I'll finish it, but I fear a lack of authorial knowledge about the status of slaves in Victorian England.

And I'm not short of reading material. Soul was just the random pick from my TBR pile. (Pick a random book is a great feature in calibre.)

That works too. I just know how anticlimactic can it be to finish a chunky and underwhelming book.

I should have abandoned it at 40%. Two stories, one in the 1860s, one in the 2000s, connected by the two protagonists being related.

Dull. (And it's hard to forgive someone getting the status of slaves in the UK in the 1860s wrong. Any slave brought to the UK by someone from the Confederate States would no longer be a slave, while this character merely planned to escape their slavery after returning the the Confederacy!!)

Next up: Spellmaker by Charlie N. Holmberg. The sequel to Spellbreaker.

About 20% through Pandemic by Robin Cook. Good so far. It had been on deep discount in March of 2020. Just getting to it.

LONG wait at the library for this one. I'd like to read it, but it's outside my price point so I'll just have to wait.

I enjoyed The Martian but his second book was a complete dud for me. Hope this one is better.

While I had some issues with The Martian, I did enjoy it. The second one? Hopeless. But the reviews on this one are more promising. We'll see -- second books are often duds, the key will be if he can recover from it.

I prefer The Martian to Project Hail Mary but enjoyed them both. I've seen differing opinions as to which is better with many reviewers saying this new one is his best.

Artemis was a dud for me too.

Another good mystery. With Montalbano being quite brilliant. 4/5

Next up: Daughter of Mystery by Heather Rose Jones. An historical fantasy, bought in a StoryBundle back in July 2016.

Perhaps this one will make the bundle worthwhile...

I finished War & Peace last month then dived into John le Carre's Smiley books starting with his first "A Call for the Dead" and am now a few chapters into "The Honourable Schoolboy" the second after "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" in the Karla series. He's a wonderful writer & his actual experience in MI6 gives him a nice insight (the character George Smiley is based on le Carre's old boss there).

It did indeed. A most enjoyable fantasy/romance, although I would have preferred a bit more exploration of the fantasy side.

Next up: Sweeny Todd and other stories by Nei Gaiman & Michael Zulli. A graphic novel bought in a Neil Gaiman bundle.
