Exactly, that is what I am trying to do, find duplicates of books when the other methods don't work.

Why would other methods not work? Would you have the information for the same books so different that find similar will not work?

I guess everything might be possible, but I suggest you use one of the many duplicate image finders.

Find one that will do things like search within a directory tree (i.e. a calibre library) for an approximate match to a selected image. I won't recommend the one I use, it's GUI is worse than clunky and its long since been abandoned.

I think it would make the process too complicated because you have to find the right folders and then find them in calibre, which makes it not worth it. Thanks anyway.

Another thing that I would find useful and save time is if Find Duplicates could search for duplicates and display the duplicate books with different formats. It would make it possible to easily remove books with formats that you do not need.

If you know you don't want a specific format, you can display just the eBooks with that format.

From what I saw of it before writing the person off, it had multiple copies of quite a few books with godawful metadata and covers that did not belong to the books.

I have seen retail eBooks with the same cover image and different title.

It was a Star Trek eBook where the title was Star Trek and when I downloaded a new copy (because I searched by title and it didn't show) it had the correct title. I don't get why the metadata is sometimes incorrect.

What I do now is if the metadata is not correct, I'll correct it in Calibre when it's loaded so I can find it when I want it.

I own one series where the same base cover image but with different text was used for all 5 ebooks in the series. At a WEG, the author did not have rights to the original paper book cover images and went cheap. Much like using calibre's generic covers, it was not very satisfying.

My library is not very big but contains more than I need and I am too lazy to go through it so a better tool too make it smaller would be good.

Do you mean that it is possible to filter the books of a certain format from the duplicates found by Find Duplicates?

Binary comparison does not work properly for me, it only finds some of the duplicates.
